Read up on Prosci and the Kotter change model. If you’re serious about OCM, consider getting Prosci cert

Manager 1: read the rest of the responses, they provide better advice. As someone who’s been in the change space and only this space, not a PM or DL who thinks they can do both, trust me when I tell you it’s not a great first step. Try taking John Kotter and using that in a large scale technology implantation, or using prosci and integrating that into a global strategy. Unfortunately, it’s going to leave a lot to be desired and gives the false impression that it’s a matter of a few templates, start with the sponsor!!!! And do a comms plan. Yay! We did it.

Talk to someone who has done it before. Certifications are great and all, but they’re a dime a dozen. I’ve worked with plenty of OCM certified individuals who don’t know how to execute a program or identify risks outside presenting the OCM model.

Learn by doing or shadowing a real live project. Reading in a book does not make you ready to execute alone.

Get a strategy role at a mess of a company and learn what people actually care about. Read Kotter or Prosci so you know what to hack and discard (no situation can actually goes that sequentially with these processes, it’s not a thing).

To add to this, change management is very driven by behavioural theory and motivations. NLP is an excellent source for that as well as habit related study. Marketing fundamentals are also important to use as vehicles for engagement in change.

Anyone have tips on how to best clarify client briefings with clients? Is there a list of must-ask questions? Our clients often don’t know what they want and I feel like we’re not asking enough/right questions to narrow down on objectives and deliverables. Even when we align on objectives, it still ends up in changing/adding request once they see creative development. Simply want to avoid having too many rounds of revisions as they often want to “test and see” numerous amount of versions.

Last May I was volunteered for a stretch role that lasted 10 months, then corona hit so no real downtime after. Now getting volunteered to backfill a SM for an early promo. Like I want it, but I am not sure if I can do 1.5 years in a row of stretch roles without completely burning out :-( I only have been able to take 1 week off over the past year.
