Imagine spending $1000 on a watch when you could make your own sundial for free.
Watches are heavily marked up at that price point at retail unfortunately (e.g. a watch that retails for $1k may go for $500 online). Instead, I'd start with finding a watch you like and shopping around. There is a stickied post in this bowl with lots of great options at different price tiers
At that price point, personally I like divers a lot and would suggest Oris Aquis (prices vary), Zodiac Super Sea Wolf, and Christopher Ward C60 Trident
Edit: not on this bowl but the luxury watches bowl
Don't buy at retail. Huge markup. Avoid amazon also as most are questionably acquired. All designer brands (e.g., Gucci) are crap and only brand name.
In that price range, I would recommend Christopher Ward, Squale, or Hamilton watches as good value for dollar that I have personal experience with. Their sites will have links to authorized dealers. Ideally you would want to purchase from an authorized dealer to get a decent warranty/service.
From a style perspective, I don't think you can go wrong with a diver or dress watch as an all purpose single watch.

Go to Tourneau on Michigan Ave and jot down the model numbers for the watches you like then shop for them online at sites like jomashop.com, ashford.com, or even ebay. At the price range you've indicated I wouldn't be too worried.
