Probably should schedule at least 1-3 years in advance. I made sure to tell my manager that my appendix would be rupturing about a year from now: he was very understanding and let me take off an hour for the surgery (I have to work during the other 2 hours)
This is BS. Should be able to use vacation with reasonable notice.
I don't even ask for permission, just tell them when I'll be out
I cant believe it! I succeeded in getting the PTO! Its actually for an expo related to my potential side hustle / exit opportunity 😎 thanks everyone for your help and advice
Fight the good fight, OP.
You have shitty leadership.
My first manager told me that as soon as you know of your vacation. Put it on your teams calendar, INFORM your managers, present a transition/back up plan and come back recharged. It's your right. You earned it.
Another good tip is to have your demand manager update your schedule when you become aware of these dates (i.e. Weddings, vacations). It's helpful to already have them documented when you begin a project.
Here is how you should ask for PTO: "I'm taking date1, date2 and date3 off."
Best approach is to ask 3-6 months ahead of time.
You should talk to your coach. That's ridiculous.
Love when managers say you can take vacation after the project... then after the project you either get extended or are on another intense project. Never listen to your manager regarding vacation. Just request the time off at least a month in advance and take it off. If they can't work around that then they clearly aren't paying you enough for how dependent they are on you
Funny update: manager and director got in trouble from HR for trying to prevent someone from leaving client site for a week to go to a mandatory training. Lol, maybe thats why they were more agreeable with me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But its only 3 days!!
@d1 😂
I just requested! Wish me luck! I tried to focus on client impact / the project plan and emphasized that this would be a lighter week that can be covered easily. Historically they have rejected requests even 1.5 months in advance but because of project scheduling (go live dates)
How long ago did you communicate the need? If you didn't give them reasonable notice, it isn't really their fault.
ROFL D1
Reasonable notice is key. Or just ask what needs to be done within those 3 days and get it done so that you can go.
I feel like the older I get, the less willing I am to allow myself to be denied PTO. Fire me if you must.
I think two weeks notice is fair. Give notice as early. It can't be difficult when you onboard a project right before your planned vacation though
