Make a database of something that’s personally relevant and interesting to you. Sports, investments, anything you like and know well. This way you can learn not only the syntax of creating, updating, modifying, and querying databases but also the ways of thinking and reasoning behind best practices - it’s much easier to internalize when the data is personally meaningful enough that you would notice and care about inconsistencies, and you’d have an intuitive sense of what successful implementation should look like.
You can do this with google, MySQL workbench, and a bit of patience. It will take longer than a course, but you’ll learn a lot more and retain it much better.

i thought the codecademy course was pretty good. that was years ago and i’ve since forgotten almost all of it, but it was solid at the time
