M&A and EC/VC work will leave you with the most options if you don’t make partner.
I’m not sure I understand the question: you’re both trying to make partner (eventually, not imminently) and keep options open for in-house or other exits? If so, I’d say EG/VC & M&A: I can’t see many buy-side clients needing a full-time benefits lawyer on the books (someone is going to pipe up with “but KKR…” here 🙄)
No - I think “screwed” is too strong: there are exit options but (I would suggest) more likely into big corporates or banks etc where you’re doing more HR-type stuff. I think few funds/ buy-side institutions will need full time in-house benefits support. Am always happy to be corrected by other though!
