Disagree with K1. UA/Star Alliance are definitely better

Both trash, but I give the edge to AA for their better partners and reciprocal benefits

Honestly, not much, status isn’t worth the scratch it’s on anymore, except in IRROPS situations and the occasional upgrade. But AA let’s you earn without flying (which I find dumb to spend on their CC for miles and status), and I find they have (had with Asia closed) better partners and reciprocal benefits, like seat selection, lounges etc
I hate American Airlines with a deep, burning passion. I’m locked into them on account of living in Dallas and my main destination also being an AA hub.
But I plan to divorce them the moment it is advantageous.
Why??

Op, you can search this board for the many, many discussions that have already occurred on this topic. But I’ll say this, the choice really comes down to where you’re based and where you plan to travel.
US carriers and their loyalty programs are not the best , go based on which dominate your local hub and where you frequently travel ( AA - One World is better w/ Asia, Asia - Pacific partners, United - Star Alliance is better w/European partners. Or just look into Capital ones venture X program which does decent on miles and transfer to other airlines for now .

OP, you need to answer the question. What do you want out of a FF program, most direct routes from your home base, easiest mileage accrual/usage, partners, upgrades, lounges etc. what you really care for might make this choice very simple
