Better to be a big fish in a small pond or a little fish in a big pond for MBA apps (I.e. superstar at B4 or mediocre/below average at MBB; metaphorically speaking ofc, ik the B4 is technically bigger in terms of size but you understand the point in terms of competitiveness)?

You get compared to your peers. There are X spots for MBB and Y spots for Big4. So if you are top in Big4 you are more likely to get one of the spots than someone meh in MBB

Yup, quotas for everything. The quota for MBB are higher tho, hence why some people incorrectly say it is 'easier'

No, this situation is quite unrealistic to begin with. And it’s more complex than that. When it comes to applications to M7, it’s definitely relatively better to be in the top 5% at the Big 4 than the bottom 10% of MBB. But it’s not that simple. First of all, in real life, no one is ever making this choice because you don’t know how you will perform in the job. Would an undergrad ever turn down MBB to join Big 4? No. From a numbers perspective, you can be quite mediocre at MBB and still land at a great school, T10, because there are much fewer MBB consultants than Big4. It’s more a small pool of “great fish” vs. a big pool of “mediocre fish” (not just big pond vs. small pond). And the top schools always take way more from the small pool of great fish. There’s also more outs for an MBB person. If they’re not performing well at consulting, they can switch and become a top industry candidate quite easily. Also when it comes to whom gets selected from B4 for M7, your demographic matters. It’s an open secret that M7 uses B4 candidates to round out their women and URM quotas. So if you’re an Asian American male applying from B4, your chances are very very slim even if you’re at the top of your firm.

like

^ 100%. Many applicants who are women & URM coming from MBB are headed to H/S/sometimes W. Disproportionately more MBB men and B4 women & URMs at other M7s.

Does this apply to certain companies as well? For instance those that work in tech: if there are those that work at Google & FB that apply to the same school, would the admissions committee unofficially try to admit more evenly across both even if (in this example) they’re both in the tech industry and all FB applicants were stronger applicants?

likesmart

Yep, and soft quotas for other industries too.

Weird question, but big fish in a small pond (for m7 at least)

Can you explain why? My intuition says that the opposite should be true but I’m not sure.

funny

I think he/she is saying there are fewer people in general from MBB and they can’t accept all MBB, when trying to round out the class, it’s prudent to choose from the more diverse group of candidates, of which many more come from Big 4 just bc they have far more people
