Big 4 pension equals Big Tech RSU. Curious what you think.

Well, since I joined Google in 2019, the stock price went up almost 150% and my sign on stock grant of 300k is worth roughly 775k. Plus with the annual refreshers, I have almost 900k in stock that vests over 4 years — and the price only seems to go up. Similarly when I joined Microsoft in 2015 as my first job, I had a (pretty average) sign on stock grant of 100k and the stock was about 50$ back then. The stock is currently valued at 280$ and my sign on grant has become 5x. (There were some stock refreshers too but Microsoft is pretty bad at the refresh amount so that didn’t matter to much - maybe 120k overall). I don’t know about the big 4 pension. At big tech, especially at G/F/Apple senior engineers routinely get stock refreshers in 120-170k range.

Oh we get pension at deloitte? That's cool. Anyone hiring at FAANG?

like

Aaaand go!

Not even close. Especially when you factor in the time value of money. My Adobe stock is 40% up from when I joined in the last year. I think the rate on the pension is 5%/yr. + 5k credit. In addition to that top performers get RSU refreshers.

like

Depends on the employer lol

My pension after 10 years is worth 55k. I hope you’re joking.

like

That's like saying a penny equals a dollar.

Yeah again, I don’t know how much base salary big 4 makes. You start out at ~140k base in pretty much any big 4 in tech (in Bay Area). As a senior engineer I make 205k in base.

B4 pension for partners (top 5% of the firm), while RSU are for like 95% of FANG people.

like

They get a defined benefit pension or they get 5% of salary into a defined contribution retirement account at D?

Not even close. My joining RSUs in 2018 was 35k/yr. My RSUs now are worth 355k/yr.

like

In what way? I have both so could try to answer any questions

My initial RSU grant was 4x my proposed buyout for the pension when I changed roles… which I guess the lump sum controls for the time value of the payments if you wait for retirement

Lol

Lol

It’s a disgrace that Big 4 (and most all consulting) remain private companies for the most ridiculous reasons, meanwhile public firms (with patience) provide true wealth building opportunities for their long time employees. And if your lucky enough to be at some tech firms, you’re a wealthy person in a short time. All pensions aren’t bad…but they’re are some terrible pensions.

Just received an offer for 95k base as a staff analyst at EY. Currently in industry (finance) my TC last year was just under 100k. Not thrilled as EY’s benefits are worse than my current firm and TC is likely to be the same. I’m not happy at my current firm and I know this isn’t the norm but EY seems to have a better WLB. What do people think about the offer? EY rep seems to think there is not a lot of flexibility to negotiate, this seems to be near the top. Should I ask for a signing bonus?

Hi Tax Bowlers, I'm an experienced associate (2yrs) in a Big 4 Transfer Pricing division. I have reached a point in my career where I am considering taking up a professional certification. Several colleagues recommended taking up either ACCA or CFA, however, I see little connection between these certifications and the work that I am currently doing, and what I plan to do in the future. What would you guys suggest? Would it be detrimental to my career if I did not take up any certifications?
