Big law Associates, are any of you seeing remote only big law jobs in the recruiter email blasts that you receive on a daily basis? I work at a large international firm. Although most offices pay Cravath salaries and bonuses, my office doesn’t even though hours expectations are on par with or greater than the top NY based firms. In this COVID world, I know many NY based associates have left the city and are living in low cost areas. Are full time remote offers a thing?

Legal recruiters will try and sell people anything lol. It’s doable, but it’s tough and a lot of firms will say no to the idea. It also makes you less competitive to other applicants who are already barred in the city the position is based in and who intend to integrate with the firm in person when offices do open. However, it may be worth the shot, worst case they say no.

I’m a recruiter for Global 200 and AmLaw 250 firms, as well as inhouse departments. All of our offers since April have been temporarily or permanently remote. We only work with experienced, high caliber attorneys. We do not send job listings out, and there are many other firms that don’t. Where are you located?

We have an ethics lawyer on staff.

the problem is that "practicing law without a license" is an offense whose definition is archaic in every jurisdiction, has no business existing in a global economy or a world with internet, or one where most lawyers don't go to court. it takes an ethics lawyer to sort out which jurisdictions might actually enforce it for things like working remotely in state x when only admitted to practice in state Y. technically speaking, I understand many state licensing authorities could be doing so even now. it's never great to be at the whim of discretionary nonenforcement policies. short term, one hopes the protectionist licensing cartel can be expected to ease off during the pandemic, at least, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if Florida, for one, tries to keep out competition from lawyers licensed elsewhere (say, NY) come winter. After all, it's win win if they can extort bar fees or protect local jobs; not like these snowbirds would be paying them income taxes anyway! I am not an ethics lawyer but I'm sure that most firms' general counsels have looked into the possible issues raised by more lawyers working out of state, and I would expect most to be their usual risk averse selves and recommend against hiring people to work remotely permanently with a blanket disregard for where they're actually located and where admitted to practice. beyond that, more specific and possibly more accommodating recommendations are above my pay grade, but I am curious myself.

I’m not sure you be willing to get barred in some random state would matter much if your firm doesn’t already have an office there. There’s partnership returns that would have to be made in your rando state, etc.

Are midlevel associates starting to see daily recruitment emails again? I’m at maybe one per week now, after a few months of zero or near zero.

It’s my birthday tomorrow so I have been calling my friends to come to the party this weekend (I limited to >10 ppl due to Covid). I was planning to have a lunch drinks/pizza party since I wanted to keep it casual and outdoors, but I have been awestruck because most of them asked about whether they need to chip in for the party food/drinks or if there are hot guys before they said no. I guess I was naive to think they will all say they will come just because it’s my birthday.. kinda sad :(

We just had 10-15% cutbacks. Firm based in Europe. They say it’s not performance based and all to COVID, our whole team got axed in nyc. Is it normal to get basically zero feedback? Brand new associate working at a mid sized firm. Been there a few months now and firm is still WFH. I get a fairly consistent amount of work. But I send my work product off into the ether and typically hear nothing or very little back (even when I follow up). I’ve gotten same vague “good work” feedback but that’s about it. I’ve drafted memos to clients and some briefs that have been sent/submitted nearly verbatim, so I assume that’s a good sign.
