Biggest pet peeve in the office? I’ll go first. I’m really sensitive to scents so I hate when people eat lunch at their desk. It’s even worse if I’m a new employee, cuz it’s like, are you on lunch or are you working?? Can I ask you a question or not? I always take my lunches away from my desk and other people who didn’t volunteer to smell it. Anyway though. What bugs you?

Bring me dirty gossip or don’t speak to me. I’m working.

likefunny

I HATE when people send a message on Teams or slack or whatever and just say “hi! How are you?” - just ask the question or tell me what you need, we don’t need to make virtual small talk, please

likesmart

This is a great perspective. I’m all for being to the point but doesn’t it feel a bit cold, even if I do only just have a qq?

The inane conversations around food. Either someone is saying "I shouldn't" or "I'm cheating on my diet" or some disordered eating-adjacent comment. Or people say things like "That looks good. What is that???" I'm not a fan of small talk in general, but food small talk is the worst.

like

Ugh yes! Like... your comment about or emphasis around only eating half a donut might affect someone nearby who ate a whole donut. Not a single dang person should be made to feel guilty about eating a donut.

like

People who are overly talkative - like can’t have quiet or let you do your work level. I’m happy to engage in chit chat or even get distracted for 15 mins here and there. But I’m an introvert and sometimes people want to just chat for the entire day - it’s draining and so distracting. And I never want to be rude so I don’t say anything.

likeupliftingsmart

THIS TOO! If you’d have asked me a year ago, I’d have said this. But luckily I stopped having coworkers like this. Good luck to you. 🤞🏼

like

People who complain / vent all the time. I have a coworker who complains day after day about the same issues. I get it, we’re all unhappy with some stuff, but at some point resign yourself to it or leave. Do not use thirty minutes of a sixty minute call to repeat your same grievances.

like

That time every hour when meetings are ending for everyone and we all go to the bathroom at the same time to contemplate the sewage scent and the loud noises coming from my coworkers’ asses

likefunny

No because this is the WORST. The fan was also constantlyyyy broken in the bathroom at my ex-office and it smelled so bad all the time

Loud chewing 🤮

like

Misophonia? My son and I both have that. The rage I feel when people chew loudly (or bite their nails) is *not* a joke.

When you order food for the entire office and that one person who always wants to order something special. Just eat the damn sandwiches and be happy. I don't see you volunteering to put the order together or cater to everyone's dietary restrictions or go pick it up or set up the food or clean up after your complaining self.

likesmart

yes to this! I think everyone should have to order a lunch for a group of 10 or more at least once to understand how freaking annoying people get about food. People become such babies when it comes to free food!

smart

If they’re salaried not much you can do with people eating at desk until there’s rodents and management makes new rule no keeping food or eating at desk. (This has happened). Hourly employees should not be eating at their desk, they need to be eating away from their desk.

Really? Personally I am more bothered by people who don’t do their job

like

Backstabbing. I’ve encountered a few rabid dogs that should’ve been put down. Don’t act like we’re cool 😎 just to spread our conversation around the office. Busy bodies. Same difference.

like

THIS!!!

People who take their calls or listen to voicemail on speaker phone. I don’t need to hear this phone call, pick up the handset or get a headset.

I work from home now full time. But when I worked in the office the guy who sat behind me (no partition, and about 2 ft away) would have all his conversations on speaker! Ugghhh so freaking annoying when I’m trying to analyze wry detailed information!

like

People who cough incessantly and for weeks/months, this happened pre-covid too. Buy some freaking cough drops, drink some water, do SOMETHING to fix it!

People walking up to your desk,, interrupting you, constantly.

I have 2 big ones. When I'm clearly in the middle of something important and someone comes up to ask me something, ask me to do something, XYZ... and I ask them "one minute" and they proceed to tell me a personal story because they think that my "one minute" only pertains to work stuff.

Second is that I got promoted in my company and during my promotion interview, the owner of the company told me that my role is very important, and that I will need to learn to delegate things, but more importantly that I will need to be able to say "no" to tasks that I don't have time for. He's the one that gives me more tasks than anyone else and won't ever let me say no to him.

That whole “it’s about setting your priorities” BS when everything is genuinely a priority because there is an immovable deadline on a project that is mandatory for a legitimate reason (and not enough people are available to get it all done) drives me crazy.

I’m looking for some advice. I’m a mechanical engineering graduate with 1 YOE as a lead mechanical design engineer at a biotech startup. I don’t enjoy the R&D space as much as I thought I would and want a job that’s WFH but I still enjoy problem solving as an engineer. Is it worth it for me to go back to school for a software masters or bootcamp? What are some other roles I can pursue with my background?

Now, I am on notice period and want to do same but don’t feel doing it since management sucks and my co-workers will be ones who will feel pressurized as I have been in same place before. What would you do?

Your teammate with the same title and pay as you is at your desk all the time for help. I'm definitely open to helping - but sometimes "help" is basically the whole job - it feels like I'm doing both jobs lol and it almost feels unfair that we both get paid the same or very close (Colorado, so pay transparency). The teammate has been with the company for longer than me.

I made a couple errors at a new job. An important document to be distributed had wrong information on it, which was proofread by 2 other people. Then a couple of typos in emails, the person micromanaging me told me to send out but I didn’t fix the errors. Failed to meet a deadline but completed 95%. I was written up over all this last week, fired this week. There’s a lot more to this but I think it’s because the DM doesn’t like me.
