Look. Truth be told, they are trying to figure out whether they can “deal” with you. You may be the lawyer the love or the one they hate. And they ain’t about to hire someone they hate. I’m outside, but my entire family tells me this (which is kinda where I am where I am), but just to be you and BE COOL. What’s cool? If you don’t know, it’s not for you. Just be yourself.

Thank you!

Business people won’t necessarily get that there are different flavors of lawyers. Read up on the industry, look into suits against their competitors, and ask them what their biggest pain points are when you talk to them. It’s often something sort of childish like—such and such company gets to ________, and we don’t.

Thank you!

Business side generally isn’t going to try to assess your technical skills. They are primarily assessing: (1) Is this person an asshole or someone I can work with?; and (2) Is this lawyer’s default position on a risky action going to be “No we can’t do it” or “There are risks, but here is how we mitigate some of those risks, here are the ones we can’t and need to confirm we are okay living with those”? I think I have a great résumé and am well-qualified, but my COO told me the reason he gave me the thumbs up is because my default view on risk mgmt is “yes, with these considerations...” (I also would like to think I’m not an asshole).

While you have to constantly and proactively reinventing yourself so you aren't working a dead end role, the sustained time will allow to build deeper skills and open doors for exits beyond the typical strategy / PM roles most consultants target.
