Billed 190 hours in December and felt good about that until I heard people in my group say I "slacked off" during the holidays. I hate this industry.

I know it's easier said than done, but I honestly wouldn't care. I billed less than that and got to spend more time with my wife and family. Also, we all make the same. Even if I did slack off, it's a job...work smarter not harder. Plus, sounds like culture is a nightmare...can always test the lateral market if you don't like your firm.

It’s not the industry it’s the firm you work for. In three years I’ve never had a comment come up about my billables except at my year end review, and even then it was either “good job” or “don’t stress falling a bit short”

Yep same.

That's a productive month considering all the holidays (which you most likely had to work on). All you need to worry about is to hit your target billable hours. It's not unreasonable to have you/family time during the holidays. How else are you going to recharge so you can crush those haters the other 11 months of the year?

I’m sure I’m in the minority here, but I find working early morning hours instead of late night hours to be so much better. Three of the last five business days I’ve been at my desk (in office) before 6:00 am, and honestly I’m starting to love it. I can get so much done when people aren’t here and I can still leave at 5:00 when others start leaving.

I lateraled to a new firm because I was eager to take on more responsibility that wasn’t available at my prior firm. I was very upfront about this when I interviewed with the new firm and was guaranteed more substantive work. Half a year in, I am getting the same work as the first years as a mid-level. I’ve always been told that I operate above my class year but this has been frustrating and I feel like I’m regressing. Anyone else experience this?

Did an unsolicited submission to a firm 3 months ago, as their website indicated no recruiter submissions for unsolicited positions. Didn’t hear back, & a third-party recruiter reached out regarding an actual opening. Since I’d already submitted my materials, I can’t work with said recruiter. Would it be ok to reply to my previous email/submission to the firm explaining the situation— I.e, recruiter reached out regarding opening, can’t work w. her, resubmitting in consideration for x position?

Hey all - first year associate here… I’ve met my hours requirement for this year (requirement is 1900 and am currently at around 2050 with billable hours - approx. 2160 with non billable admin hours) and I am just tired. Is it okay to just “disappear” during the holidays (thanksgiving week, week of Christmas) and let partners and senior associates know I am not available? At this point I don’t care about making more money - I just want to sleep, read a good trashy book, and cuddle with my dog.

Another hours post — I’ve been so slow this year. I hate it. I’ve asked for work and pick up projects here and there but the group generally isn’t busy. I’m annualizing at around 1700. Last year I billed 2100. I’m concerned how this is going to impact my reviews. And in general just concerned about wasting a year not really learning much or being valuable. I actually prefer being busy and this is kind of torture. Might even start looking to lateral if things don’t pick up soon. Thoughts?

Going full coast mode. Junior in corporate group. Decent reviews so far so I’m hoping to get a year of true slacking in before getting three months to find something else. I’ll report back on the experience.
