Not sure how to respond but I agree, start talking to recruiters. At minimum it will make you feel better because you’ll see you have other opportunities. Is there any other way the firm rewarded you (or can reward you) for your good work? Also, do you know how much other associates got? That is really frustrating and demotivating, I’m sorry.
Wow! I worked 4 months (just hired, then had a baby and didn’t return until new year) and still got $2,500.
Sorry, I definitely could’ve been more clear. I shouldn’t assume everyone would use them simultaneously.
Thank you all for your thoughts!
As an update: I thanked but expressed my surprise about the bonus. Reminded the office managing partner what was represented to me when I accepted the position, and asked if that was a normal range for the firm. He said they generally base it off of how many years you've been with the firm. I pointed out that I am relied upon and used like the associates who have been their 5 years (overseeing other associates work, managing my own files, etc.), and should be compensated accordingly.
He's going to speak with the firm managing partner. I just ended it saying that if there's something I'm not doing that they want me to, I just need to know what that is.
I figured I might as well say something if the other option is leaving anyway.
Good friction. You definitely delivered the right message at the appropriate time. Somebody has to make friction if we are going to get anywhere on hours and wages.
$2,500 after tax is barely a rent payment.
This is why we need a union. No way to spin partners penny pinching when people like you are billing 2150 and doing non-billable work.
Me too at first. But I refinanced. So rent is a closer number now. But only by a single thinning strand of hair. Lol
that seems extremely low. What is your bonus scale/how were your reviews?
I'm 2017, but I clerked for a year. It's a midsized firm. They told me at my interview I would be eligible for a $10k annual raise. I heard later no one ever gets that much, but I honestly found this insulting. (It's the same bonus my old firm paid paralegals).
There wasn't a single negative at my review. They want me working on higher billed assignments because as the managing partner said I'm an excellent attorney and they could be using me better. I had the 2nd highest billables of any associate, and I do a ton of non-billable firm management and marketing work.
How do I respond? Do I just politely thank them and start looking elsewhere or do I question it?
Start looking for a new position at a higher paying firm. Now. When they ask as you give notice why you’re leaving tell them honestly that the bonus given for the hours billed was too little and you’re leaving for a better compensation package.
Start talking to recruiters!
Well, my bonus was a $500 gift card. But also, two months before the holidays, boss gave me a fat raise. So I wasn’t that offended.
Good! The raise is much more meaningful!
I’m sorry, that is disappointing. Try to take it in stride.
Are recruiters the best bet or should I apply directly to listed positions? I actually applied to a couple positions tonight. I can't work this many hours for no return. I'm trying to pay off my student loan debt.

Its time for you to start talking to recruiters
What class year are you and how big is your firm?
I guess it would depend on your base salary. My MINIMUM annual billing req is 2340. If we don’t hit it, no bonus, not even Christmas bonus, and likely no raise at year end. But if you do hit it, they treat you well. Am I used and abused?
Our associate turnover rate is about 90% every year. With that much turnover, the remaining associates have transferred files being thrown at them every day, fires to put out, endless appearances, etc. More work/files = more billing. So, the billing actually comes easily. I try to get lost in it, keep my head down, and be a team player, which is seen as functioning....at work anyway. My partners have always given me what I asked for at raise reviews, and I’m on partner track. As for functioning in my personal life, you’d have to ask my therapist...
Sounds like under appreciation is part of their model system and you should start looking for work where hard work is actually valued.
That sounds especially low.
Pop that in your “how soon do I leave” calculator
