Billing is about to drive me over the edge. I hate it. I love the law, generally like most aspects of my job, but the billing is awful. I feel super depressed and burnt out because of it. My bills are okay. I just don’t have 8 hours worth of work everyday/when I work for 7 hours on a substantive document I’m exhausted. I don’t know if I can keep this up. Any advice? I have amazing opportunities at my firm so idk if I want to leave but this is awful

I agree, I hate billables and they're not sustainable for me. I'm leaving my firm for a government position that doesn't use billables.

I did this. The pay is lower but I was at a midsized firm so while it was a hit, it was one I could absorb. Quality of life is so much better.

Depending on your future goals, just ride out as much as you can with lower hours (7 a day probably won’t meet your billable requirement) and see where that takes you. Get enough experience and move in-house where you won’t have to deal with billable hours.

We have “no billables.” But my bonus is based off of how much I make the firm so… 🫠

I get hating the amount of work but a lot of people seem to hate billable hours as distinct from just like... working a ton. I dont totally follow that, how does it hit differently?

Partner just railed into me for using a sentence that, according to him, made no sense. He then said that if I didn’t understand why that was the case, maybe he needed to have the entire firm take a writing course. This is what I wrote in a pleading (changing the exact wording except for the phrase “This posed very difficult,” which the partner said didn’t make any sense): (continued in comments)

Shout out to those who, like me, choose the boutique firm life over big law. Managing partner told me I am crushing billing - said I’m the rockstar on our team. My average billing for the past three months is 6.6 hours per day. Unpopular opinion: making big law money in exchange for big law hours doesn’t mean you make more money; it just means you work more.

I hate my job. I work dozens of child sex assault cases and my team is understaffed. Turnover is insane, haven't been able to go more than two months without another attorney or paralegal resigning. Management doesn't care and just keeps foisting the work on the new people till they burn out too. I'm only here because I need the paternity leave when my newlywed wife and I have our first kid. If it weren't for that I would be searching for a new job right now. Just wanted to rant, sorry.
