Billing question/firm expanded too fast.

Fifth year here. Started at new firm 6 months ago, and they hired 4 people for 2 empty spots (they are expanding). 1800 billing requirement is enforced but there are just days where I'm not busy/billing. I've emailed and gone door to door for work, but I think they expanded too fast and concerned about not hitting minimums. Any advice/similar stories?

Yup. This was me at Fisher Phillips. I lateraled. Growth was too rapid and not enough work. I was there a little over 1.5 years. It just never got better. Last straw was when I didn’t get a full raise because I didn’t make my hours.

Spend the time bringing in clients?

In big law you should be able to bring in at-least one F500 company a quarter or your underperforming.

This happened to me and another classmate who got hired together at a firm last year after the bar. The owner started having some personal issues and work stopped coming in. The firm only filed two cases from May-December last year. The two associates who had a couple of years experience on us got whatever billable work there was and left us without much to do. We both left a few months ago.

For any of you who have worked in Big Law, if/how did you realize it wasn’t for you as a female WOC and how did you handle it? I (maybe naively) left my prior firm due to lack of mentorship, sponsorship and ongoing microaggressions. My new firm has been generally better, but so many of those issues are ongoing and I’m beginning to feel like it’s just big law. I want to stick it out but afraid of the anxiety and stress it’s causing for possibly nothing if I can’t make partner track.

Gusto I’m a product designer hoping to switch industries from the public sector to private. I am struggling because I’m starting to see a lot of pushback on the fact that I don’t have industry specific work. So I’m really curious how much working in a specific industry effects your career path.

I’m looking at some fintech jobs but ultimately want to work in hrtech? Like gusto, lattice, etc. would that potentially prevent that switch?

They don't necessarily need to be free, but if Pluralsight/Coursera/etc. has a better group of offerings than another, I could budget 1 subscription. Ideally they'd be platform-agnostic, and/or cover multiple toolsets, as I am consultant and my assignments will be largely dependent on what the customer has.

Looking for some advice. Not a regulatory lawyer by training. Partner asked me to research an issue and determine (on a budget and on a time crunch) whether a particular regulation applied to our client’s niche industry. I, on that budget and time crunch, determined it did not. Couple of weeks go by, client is still working on the issue without me, and decide to put me in touch with opposing counsel who point out additional authorities and cites and convinces me it applies. I am a 6th year associate at an AmLaw 50 firm. I received an offer to go in house at a hedge fund that has been around for only a few years. Pay is identical to a 6th year associate in BigLaw and the bonus is guaranteed for 2022. Culture seems legit and I believe that work/life balance is certainly achievable. Is it worth making the jump to go from Big Law to a hedge fund that is in a growth stage?

Their a little old school in their methods but I do see the younger gen. coming in to make changes. 2nd offer is at a newer firm however i’ve heard great things, and they offered 80k, unl. PTO, 1500 billable hours, bonus incentives qrtrly, & 50% health ins. WHY can’t I make a decision? HELP
