I struggle with this OP. The driven, Type A part of me is constantly seeking promotion, higher pay, validation, etc. But then I look back on my adult life, and when thinking about my fondest memories, none of them are even remotely related to work…work simply does not bring me happiness. At the end of the day, you should do whatever will make YOU happy. Life is short, we should try to enjoy it a bit.
I have this same struggle, and it is very real. My only real motivation to keep seeking promotion/higher pay is to make more money so I can pay off student loans quicker. Once those are out of the way, I am going to look at work very, very differently.
37 I have 4 kids and a wife total comp at $150k my wife makes $90k. Got out of consulting and into something with a great balance.
Heck I coached my 4 year olds soccer team…I don’t know a thing about soccer and am really only interested in it during the World Cup, but we had a blast and I wouldn’t have done it any other way!
Advice: money comes and goes, but so does your
life and family, pretty soon my kids will move out and have families of their own and I will get to play with grandkids and reminisce on all the times that I was able to really be there with my family and not worry about the deliverables that the analyst is supposed to have done on Monday or spend my Saturday and Sunday fixing their slides that look like they were put together by a high schooler, let alone a top 10 college undergrad, and I will eventually die, hopefully, feeling fulfilled.
Life’s too short to ask yourself why you don’t make as much as the latest poster on FB.
Honestly same thing here
No, that’s what I want. A life.
100% the same. Honestly I’d be fine with 150k TC. Just need EY to sponsor my GC 🥲
Community Builder
Did EY agree to sponsor in a specific timeline or has the conversation not been brought up at all?
Same. Was very happy with $200k in consulting and always told people I'd take that plus an inflation bump for the rest of my working days. Now I'm in tech, making $260k, with solid WLB (fully remote), and I'm not sure I have much of an interest in getting promoted.
What kind of roles in tech have higher compensation?
You do you!
Don't feel the need to justify and also don't judge others for doing something different.
If you're happy, you're winning!
You are not a black sheep. You are wiser than most because you have grasped the meaning of life. As someone approaching mid-50s, I can tell you that money won't buy you time most of us spend earning the high pay. Life's too short and you can't take money with you when you die. Do what pleases you and trust me, you are NOT the only one.
People who speak of ambition only recognize it in a the most narrow context of work. Ambition to me is living life on my own terms, making choices that align with my life goals. Up and up is one option, and reflects very outdated views embedded in our culture to get the most one can. Living with just enough is such a liberating feeling. There is nothing lazy about it. In fact, I think it's a gutsy choice in a culture of constant up and up pressure.
Kinda taking different angle of approach in my case. This is the reason why I am working hard to chase the highest pay I can get as quickly as possible so I can just achieve financial independence sooner and quit.

This is the way. I am on track for $5M at age 40, with potential upside. Then I’m out.

Come to Cap1! Should be able to get $180k so at the Manager level, and over $200k at the Sr Manager level
It’s a safe haven for smart people who don’t want to work more than 40-45 hours a week
Do you guys have remote based work?
I am 38 and make 200K . I want WLB rather than big raises and promotions . Raise enough to compete the inflation :)
Yes

I exited this year to a very slight pay cut, but with literally half the hours. I'm happy with where I'm at. Could easily chill here for decades.

Yeah, joined a public FinTech
I left to a pay cut and have zero regrets. Don’t give in to the rat race pressure!

You are not alone but people who agree with you are quiet about it in general. It's not a good look to your boss that you are comfortable where you are. Consulting is a big pyramid scheme that makes you work hard by dangling promos in front of you.
Nope. I make a bit more than that but I am totally focused on exiting comfortably much earlier than tradition (by about 2 decades). I turn 39 next month and I’ve eyes on the prize of being retired by 45.
Covering health insurance is a huge barrier for us. EY7, what kind of role did you transition to? My concern would be “being able” to mentally downshift and not be as intense
I’m an ambitious person and worked my ass off to get to a higher income bracket/socioeconomic status than what I grew up in. I love working hard, and I love producing and accomplishing things. That certainly translates to lots of career growth and “success.”
But as much as I love that, I’m slowly realizing you can feel that sense of accomplishment and “success” with outside of work initiatives. Yes, I love making good money; it’s awesome. But I left GT and am now at a firm where I get paid more and have more work life balance.
It was a little weird at first given I’ve been used to running myself into the ground for so long. But truly, I love that I work hard at work, but also have time to hit my fitness goals, accomplish things for my community, and enjoy more time with my family.
OP, you’re not a Black Sheep. I think you have a higher sense of self awareness and purpose than many.
C1 - small boutique consulting firm. Too small to share hah
I can only speak for myself but I’m young and ambitious with a very significant amount of student loans, so I don’t really have a choice. I need to increase my comp if I want to pay off my loans and own a house one day like all of my friends do.
Absolutely nothing wrong with that decision. No one can ever look down on prioritizing family; you’ve simply reached a different point in your life.
100% same-- looking for an exit that i like and gives me a life, and a pay cut is fine -- i dont want to work in some boring industry job for 300k-- though the money would be nice, but that's the tradeoff
Boring industry role for 300k would enable a life, no?
Same!! Couldn’t care less if I get to the next level. I have a great balance at this point. Managers and partners always trying to push “next level opportunities”. I’m like why I’m completely satisfied working the hours I am and balancing a fruitful life outside of work. No thanks! 🙌
Nope, same here, just not interested in climbing the corporate ladder most days
I respect you. Do what makes you happy.
