There are different corners of this industry that optimize for one thing or another. So it’s rarely “this industry” but rather “this company.”
It means that you're not going with the flow of the way "things are done here." It was thrown my way once and my answer was, "Yeah, the industry is broken and I'm trying to change it by example." You've got to find the place and people that support you.

Good insight.
Hearing this from someone is kinda devastating but people throw this around all willy-nilly. So it begs the question “how do I really know if “this” is for me or not?”
I mean it kind of depends a lot on the context.
If your complaint is that you can't stand making ads, or that having a client drives you crazy, or that you don't like seeing people with thick-rimmed glasses, then yeah, maybe this industry isn't for you.
Generally it’s a last resort to a losing argument. Insults and belittling comments like that show me a person isn’t smart enough to have an intelligent conversation with someone with a different opinion.
I usually hear this when a junior rightfully objects to giving up their weekend for no good reason. That’s when the chorus of “You can’t hack it!” tends to start on Fishbowl.
People who have been in this career for a while like to believe that the ways they’ve suffered for advertising (staying late, working for abusive bosses, etc.) are both worthwhile and inevitable. They’re neither. You don’t have to suffer the same way your CDs did to prove that you’re as good as they are. In fact, I’d argue that figuring out how to avoid all that actually makes you better at this job.

Probably both. Or maybe I’m projecting.
