Booked a non-US SPG hotel on points, arrived at midnight and was told our third person would be an extra $40 per night because of "hotel policy" even though the reservation was for 3. WWYD?

Per terms and conditions, they're right. Call the Platinum support line, though, and they can usually get a manager to waive it. Had a similar experience in HI with lounge access. Talked to the hotel manager and she made an exception to add on a third person.

Did that once with Hyatt. Had no issues infact had a rollaway bed waiting well laid out at checkin

Free nights should be free from what I recall from the terms. Check with SPG line. They may refund the charge.

tell them that the other person will be staying elsewhere
