Boss wants the team to check emails during vacation if entire team is out on PTO at the same time since they want to make sure emails are responded to during that time. Is this reasonable?

Whoever approved the whole team being off at the same time should be checking the emails..

Why is everyone out on vacation at the same time? In the legal world, yes this is reasonable for emails to have to be checked if everyone is out on vacation and therefore there is no one covering the case/deal. If you don’t want to have to do this then you should take your vacation at another time when there are people who can cover.

No way. Nope. Nada.

As a solo, I'm the boss and, yes, I check emails when on vacation. I check emails every day regardless. All matters are my responsibility 24/7/365.

Does this mean you could never go somewhere like Cuba or Bhutan? Or could that be a special occasion where someone would cover for you?

Nooooo haha the whole point of PTO is to not think about/do work.

like

This is illegal in Europe, so I cannot help you here. However, a sensible manager would not approve everyone's PTO at the same time, keeping at least one person covering, if covering is needed.

like

Agreed with the above. The manager should either ensure not everyone is out at the same time or he/she should set expectations with the clients that from x-y no work is getting done.

I would say that is definitely an HR question, On a personal note, taking an occasional peek at emails isn't a bad idea because when you think about how many you might have stacked up when you return, maybe checking them for important ones isn't such a bad idea. However, you aren't getting paid for it and as long as you are able to set a vacation reminder, I say enjoy your time off!

Who let the whole team take pto on the same week?! I guess that’s his/her fault.

🤪 are they all jumping ship including immediate manager? Cheers 🍻

I’ve been waiting for security clearance since July and just found out I’m pregnant after trying for a year. I’m hoping clearance will be granted in early spring 2021 and I can start work soon after. Thankfully taking unpaid time off isn’t a big issue (won’t be eligible for FMLA or parental leave), but worried about timing and telling HR & my supervisor. I’m planning to tell them once I start; know timing isn’t ideal and stressed about starting off on the wrong foot. Any advice?

I know this varies based on the company but besides project needs from the hiring manager, does anybody take multiple months between when your background check clears and you actually start? Those of you who work at smaller companies (under 50 employees), would you mind sharing what kind of benefits you receive? How much pto? What’s the contribution to health, dental etc? Do you get any less common benefits? Thank you

Hi all. Posted this in a different bowl and not getting any replies. Hoping you all can help. What benefits are smaller companies (under 50 employees) offering? How much pto? How big of a contribution to health, dental? Any spousal or dependent coverage? Any other less common benefits? Basically looking for ways to remain competitive to the degree possible with larger employers. Thanks!
