To be completely transparent, there isn’t much structured support or learning at a B4, so you’re unlikely to get anything different than at your boutique. At least at EY, while there are tons of web based learnings available, it’s no different than what you could get on Skillshare. The internal processes and systems are always changing and a bit confusing so those who are your assigned mentors often don’t know much more than you.

Definitely more coaching at boutiques

It depends on where you sit. I know that most people have structured trainings, study groups, certifications. At D, ETP analysts usually get funded to do CIMA. HC people do certs like workday. I know some in bizops that have done all 3 levels of CFA. And specific softwares like Salesforce, SAP, tableau certs…

Hey OP, I’ve worked in the top 15 firms, IA consulting, compliance / cyber, and now EY. I thought the exact same thing having the impression that the big 4 would provide some crazy structure or learning. Not… exactly true. In the big 4, you will have the opportunity to meet brilliant people with some effort. You can ask interesting questions and learn what you want to (if you’re lucky). Boutique firms that are smaller have processes that probably make more sense and aren’t as frustrating as big4 might be because they aren’t appeasing 300k people. You’ll also have more time with your seniors/managers for 1:1 relationships. VERY hard right now to do that virtually in a firm of 300k+

I went from Accenture to a boutique and got way more training at the boutique. The big firms like to tout their training budgets but most of it is random online stuff that's equivalent to going through a coursera class i.e. you can learn stuff but no one is really going to care about your credential or whatever. Going to the Q school for training was fun but I learned basically nothing. If there are specific certifications that the big firms would cover that you want, then it might be worth it but it's very self led

100% accurate ^ however, please keep in mind that you’re likely to get credibility from having a big name on your CV (which was my goal).

If you were looking to exit Big 4 Consulting, what positions would you be targeting? I have done a little of everything with no specialization (great performance reviews across the board). But now a little unsure of what my skills really are from an employer POV.

My (white) manager consistently gives me feedback that I’m “very literal” when doing assignments. She asks for something, I do what her directions say, and she tells me “oh you took that very literally. You’re very literal.” Obviously consulting is subjective and we’ve all had managers give vague directions leading to multiple iterations of work, but at what point do I push back? I’ve also noticed her say this about several black colleagues including clients and the senior mgr on the project.
