Brand new associate at Cravath scale firm (NYC): EVERY single midlevel and junior has left my group since I started to lateral to other biglaw firms. No insight on why beyond a vague "seeking other opportunities" when I asked. Only associates left are two seniors. The partner-associate ratio is now > 1. Is there hope in asking the firm for clarity or should I be more worried about being unemployed? How do I even prepare to find another job this early?

Could you reach out to someone who left your PG and ask? Are there Associate reps you could ask?

You need to find someone who can speak honestly about the situation. Based on those answers, you’ll know whether to hang on or start looking elsewhere. There has been so much movement lately that it’s hard to know where those departures fell on the spectrum of pushed out/ absolutely miserable and wanting to gtfo/retooling or relocating/natural attrition. If you want to stay, take advantage of the situation as best you can (hard as a junior, I know) by setting boundaries (they don’t want to lose someone else) and building strong relationships while there isn’t much competition for partner attention.

When did you start? Tons of people lateral around the beginning of the year after collecting bonus. This year everyone has covid fatigue too so may be looking for greener grass. Also biglaw just has a ton of turnover in general. How big is/was your practice group? 2 seniors left and a few partners left might be good for your career, you may find yourself handling more challenging tasks with less micro managing because there’s no one else available. When I was a second year I didn’t realize how much a senior was holding me back until he left and I suddenly started getting a lot of his work. Scary at first but then got fun and interesting. Are you getting work? Is it good work? Do you like the two seniors? Is the firm looking to hire? What are you afraid of? I don’t think it necessarily means your firm is imploding.
