(Cont) I have no creative team and little to no ability to hire one in the short term, a fuzzy mandate, and a twitchy CEO with very strong ideas that change according to his mood. I’m nervous because this makes any kind of tangible results, or even progress, extremely slow. I want to do well but I’m walking around with my stomach is knots trying to figure out where to start.
Suggest proactively setting up 1:1s with others in the org. Regardless of title, set up as many as you can. Find out what’s working well, what’s broken, what they’d like to see from your role, client feedback they’ve collected but never been able to address, etc. Plan to keep the conversation on-going (weekly/monthly huddles). Formulate your own ideas and action plan with timetables, even enlist/partner with those/other colleagues with similar goals that will help you get there faster and serve as a mini coalition. Present your findings to CEO or whoever you report to. Put it into action. If you get no direction or push back or a negative read—might be time to look for a new gig. They may be resistant to change and having someone in this role or they ALSO may not know what to tell you to do. Chart your own path there!
Were you aware before you took the job that you would be a one person creative team? If not, have an honest dialogue of what it will take to succeed. At the very least someone you can partner with whether for copy or design.
