Broadly, what are the differences in responsibility between an associate product manager and a product manager?

Highly dependent on the company of course, but I’d say it mostly has to do with the level of accountability and responsibility. The reality is most tech companies don’t actually have the associate level in a meaningful way, so for the companies that do, you’re just generally less experienced and less is expected of you.

I’d expect an associate to handle more day to day type work, like writing stories and actively managing the backlog. Handling scrum master type responsibilities. But since most companies don’t have this level, the PM in general handles it. At least at a lot of companies.

Depending on org and broadly speaking:

PM = roadmap and strategy
APM = delivery and execution

Associates typically have same responsibilities as a product owner role.

But in companies where PMs are more hands on, PM = larger initiatives, APM = smaller features

Pros to Merrill: Bump in compensation, additional tools and services w banking, ability to take over assets.

My company historically paid base comp and bonus based on years out of law school. Level 1 is 1-9, and Level 2 is 10+. Diff if $50k+, easily. My team’s work isn’t distributed any differently based on seniority, and we’re all doing the same subject matter. We have a new GC changing it so bonus can be higher (but not lower) if you take on more work.

Do you think this is a fair system? Is it right to push for equal comp, especially given that there’s a new reward system for doing more work?

I’m new to this startup and was leading a cross functional project involving several other product teams with dependencies. When we got near the end with E2E testing, I realized that none of the product teams really do QA: no test scripts, not logs of dev unit testing, no documentation of testing cycles – there devs asked “what do we do about edge cases?” I raised this to my boss (since I don’t manage those other teams) and he said I’m creating unnecessary stress for the teams. Is he right?
