Maybe buying a beater for $1500-$2000 then selling it when he gets to cali would be cheaper
I won't go that cheap just because I want to keep your brother safe during his roadtrip. I would suggest a $5k budget, buy the best and cheapest condition Honda Accord / Civic / Toyota Camry / Corolla. Drive that thing cross country. Wash it, vacuum it, and list it back on Craigslist for $5.5k 💪
What P1 said. I've done this before for about 2700, and managed to get some of it back when I sold the car.
But don't forget with owning, you'll also need to get insurance
Is this for a round trip where you return the car to the pickup location? I'd go with searching popular travel sites like Expedia for best rental car deals. Just make sure you get unlimited miles for that rental.
Yeah, would recommend buying a good used car over a rental. Without a doubt. Rentals have so many hidden fees. See if any friends or family want to sell a trustworthy old car
And P2, legally, you only need to have liability insurance. For a car around $5k, it won't be more than $25/mo. If you want to add comprehensive coverage, this will set you back another $100/mo. Still cheaper than rental
Thanks for all the tips! It's for a one-way trip, last hurrah before his job starts. Time for him to do all the research on cars, car ownership and insurance
That's not a bad idea. We've never bought a car before (foreigners in NYC), how did you buy that car P1 and D1? (Website/dealership etc.)
Thanks for the tip!!
Much easier than it will seem. Good luck!
Btw, you can usually get discount insurance through your firm.
