Busy season moms: especially if you’re single parent… can you give me some fun or any ideas on how to spend time with kids besides typical playing. I usually work 10-12 hr days and reserve Friday and Sunday only for them. We’re snowed in otherwise we go do things like movies and ice skating. They are 8 and 6 for reference.

Game night - my 10/7/4 year olds love family game night. We also enjoy dance parties (Alexa plays great music), Just Dance or Mario Party on the nintendo switch, baking/ice cream sundaes, and movie night when everyone brings their sleeping bags to the living room.

One of those outschool vid "classes?"

I happened to think that kiwi (crate subscription) has DIY activities on their website for a broad range of ages. Might find a free, spur of the moment STEM, art, etc activity...

We do outside stuff like hiking & geocaching or camping. They also like to show me their fort in the woods they work on with other neighborhood kids. Mine are 10 & 6 so I let them lead to some extent in what they want to do vs planning on my own. I actually got griped at that "we take too many vacations". Must be a struggle to be my kid lol.

Baking pretzels with my 6 and 8 year olds is always a huge hit. Also getting a giant box and making a spaceship/clubhouse. We also do Alexa dance parties, and baths with bubbles and those water crayons.

I will also let them decorate the house with streamers, hand made drawings all over the windows for whatever holiday is coming. Valentine’s Day is an easy one!

Hey guys… I’m a case worker in child safety and I’m someone who loves being outdoors/dies at a desk all day. I’m hoping to organise that at least once a week I can go to a cafe and catch up on all my case notes that need to go into the system.
So far the only reason I’ve been told no is that “if you do then everyone will want to and then no one will be in the office” … how can I convince them that I work better out of the office and get this freedom & mental break for myself?

I want to brag on my kid, but I don’t want to embarrass him, so I’m doing it here. My college sophomore found out today that he ended up with a B in his accounting class - which is remarkable, given that he received a 50 on his first exam and a 70 on his second. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him work this hard - and I couldn’t be more proud. The grades that come easily don’t impress me nearly as much as the ones that are hard fought.

A parent of one of my students told admin she thinks it's irresponsible that I won't be grading over Christmas break. I let the students know to get any work they need graded in before the break and I'll get it to it during our workdays in January. Apparently that's not fast enough for her 🙄. Is it wrong that I'm sort of pissed off by this? Should I say something?

Welcome to our pre-k inclusive classroom. Even with 8 students, and only face to face for 4 hours, we struggle. We struggle being heard through our masks. We struggle with social distancing. We struggle as we find ourselves constantly reminding students to keep their masks on. We struggle to keep them engaged and to teach. One thing we do not struggle with- building connections and showing out love for each child.

Is it a red flag as a candidate to ask if a company offers maternity leave? I was recently laid off, so I wasn't expecting to lose my job. We're planning on trying for a baby in the next year or so, so it's really important to me that my next job offers paid maternity leave.

The issue is that it's so rarely advertised on company web sites, but ultimately better maternity leave would sway my decision for a job. Is there a way to ask this tactfully? Or without raising red flags?

Anyone can suggest help for a 4th grader who is struggling with reading comprehension? The child currently has an F in reading and parents want to get at it early? Please help. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I am a single-parent with a 9 year old daughter. Is anyone else dealing with same gender sleepovers with sexual exploration occurring? Exploring as in my daughter says outright “I am going to kiss you,” to her bestie before bed. Then after 15 minutes of giggling in bed I go to tell them to be quiet and see my daughter’s bestie is showing her buttcheeks to my daughter. To top it off they start trying to tell me they are laughing because they are reading “belly laugh books for kids”. Help.

When I was a kid, I thought being a scientist would allow me to learn about the world. I didn't realize just how much paperwork there is.

I’ve been asked to weigh in on how to improve my firms parental leave policy. It’s currently 8 weeks paid for birth parent with an extra week for each year at the firm (up to 12 weeks total) and 2 weeks paid for non-birth parent. I’m in a major city, firm is a boutique that has been around a very long time. What would you suggest? Any studies or research you’ve seen recently on trends in parental leave policies also helpful. I’d like to have some sort of data to back up what I recommend. TIA!

I just found out that I'm pregnant. I was going to go on my IVF cycle in August!

My Dr had previously mentioned that I’d be given progesterone after the transfer. I’d like to have that given to my age and history of recurring miscarriages.

Do I ask my OBGYN or my IVF Dr for this prescription? My obgyn is a believer that a baby is nature’s choice; she didn't give me anything during my last pregnancy so I’m not sure how helpful she’d be this time.

Just need to vent. MIL came over for dinner tonight. Our youngest was fussing so she put her up. She wouldn't stop crying so I went up there...well no wonder, you have her light on! So I turn it off and play it off as a let's see if this will help. She calmed down and all was well. Then, she started fussing again so MIL went back up...and turned the light on. Didn't take her out of the crib or anything, just turned the light on and patted her back. Turn the damn light off and keep it off.
