CA - How do I best negotiate higher pay scale or step advancement with the Superior Court for an attorney position? The pay is lower than any private job I’ve gotten. I have several years of practice and my background impressed them. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

You probably don’t but you do get a lifetime defined benefit pension based on the 3 highest earning yours of your career. just live modestly so you can retire at 45 and be a vampire feeding off the taxpayer for another 40 years.

Don’t know about court. I work for the AG and our salaries are based on graduation year. I don’t think there is room for negotiation. The lower than private pay is a well-known issue.

like

Yes, from talking to several people now. It sounds like state employees are tied into a very rigid system of pay with little negotiation available. At the Superior Court level, employees are county level and they apparently have negotiable pay steps, and can negotiate at what step in a classification they start at. Some counties apparently recognize they need to stay competitive so they start people at mid or top step level in pay.

I think at the very least I should be able to get a bilingual boost in pay as well.

Looking for a new job after being for Deloitte as an SC for 1.5 years and being with prior consulting firm for 7 years (8.5 YOE). I’m not up for promotion until next year but not willing to stay that long as an exp hire to *maybe* get M.

What big 4 or other large firms would be willing to interview an SC for a Manager role? My initial call with a couple recruiters made it sound like most only will do lateral until I’m M (even though I manage teams and BD).

I recently started a new role few months ago. Everything is going okay, but I feel seclusion within the team. It is so weird to discuss something like this with someone, be it your manager, but it looks like people/stakeholders just ignore my presence. The team mate who supports the same stakeholders, always talk in fashion- ‘I did this ’ instead of using we. Even stakeholders during discussion take my teammate views, thoughts into account, to understand bandwidth or work prioritisation (CONT..)

Probably a dumb question but- I have a sole prop with some income this year. Starting my PC (s-corp) soon. I assumed that I’d need two different returns next year- one for my entity and one for the income when I was a sole prop. But I was curious whether I can merge the financial statements somehow. My concern is that my income as a sole prop will appear high because the s-corp will be responsible for liabilities in the latter half of the year. Any ideas? (Clearly not a tax attorney)

I don't agree with Dave Ramsey on many things but there's one thing that really made sense.

He says keep your investments mostly in equities even into retirement since you can take advantage of the market while retired since you don't plan to withdraw everything all at once. You also have to keep 3-4 years of expenses in savings in case of market downturns.

In retirement, when the market is high, withdraw from the market. When the market is low, withdraw from savings and replenish. Thoughts?

I’m in my 30s and pretty computer literate, I don’t dictate, I like doing research etc. I know other attorneys that have their paras do all their discovery, all their research, all their motions and I wonder how it’s possible to hit billables if someone else is doing the majority of your work? Their a little old school in their methods but I do see the younger gen. coming in to make changes. 2nd offer is at a newer firm however i’ve heard great things, and they offered 80k, unl. This may be just a naive/dumb question, but how do you relax when you’ve got a really stressful file? I’m a junior and I’ve been putting in ~10ish billable hours a day recently, which is more than I’m used to. The evenings (post-8pm) are generally my time to decompress - read a book, watch dumb tv, whatever - but it’s been all work lately until 10 or 11pm and I struggle to go straight from work to bed. Any insight on what everyone else does?

I did not meet my billable budget. I’m a 1st year and around mid October realized I was going to have to bill 8-9 hours a day before the end of this month to meet my budget, and planned to. However, my dad passed mid October which caused me to take time off. I’m about 200 hours behind, though. My boss said not to worry about it as they are understanding about me needing to take time off, but I’m still worried that this looks really bad…
