Call me crazy but, I took a 78k pay cut to go work for the Maryland government. Stability is nice but I really will need to get used to the wage difference.

Crazy 😜

I did something similar but it was about a $30k pay cut. I actually went from government to academia. Great experience but academia simply can't compete with other sectors' pay.

Wow! That’s a whole “decent salary” as a pay cut.
That’s huge, particularly because inflation is, well, inflating 🥴
Is it just you? Spouse/partner? Kids? And will you still live in MD? Many sections of MD is not cheap.

I’ve got about 20 years cross channel experience in marketing, split between big brands and startups, and I’m considering pivoting into a data science/data analyst role. I know it will initially be a step back in comp but is it at all realistic for a person with certificate level experience in data analysis but a decent marketing management background to expect $150-200k comp or is that mostly for degreed candidates (or not realistic at all)? Any guidance here is greatly appreciated.

Additional Posts in Government

A HR question I really want to understand. ISRS HR quoted a podcast "The not so great resignation" saying 70% regret leaving and many want to go back to old employer. If this really the case the employee likely left due to higher pay at the new company. If they want to boomerang back they will likely come back at even a higher rate than they left the new company for. So getting double raise when they boomeranged. Isn't it unbeneficial, why not just give employee a 7% raise in the first place?
