Campus hire just started with B4 in a T2/3 city. Making 50k and feel like I’m underpaid (comfortable COL is about 70k). How do I negotiate when firm says they pay on cost of labor rather than living?

Why did you accept the offer if you’re not happy with it?

like

I went/am going through the same thing. I am constantly feeling undervalued. Also always asking myself the same question, why did I accept if I wasn't comfortable with being paid 15k below average

like

Just let it be something that motivates you. If you choose to stay, let it drive your growth in the firm. If you leave, use the experience we're going through to make more informed career choices in the future.

This isn’t a feel-good reply, but I’ve never known of any instance where junior resources are successful negotiating a COL-adjusting bump. YMMV and I hope it does, but you’re short on leverage. Best bet is jump for a bump

like

Yes... But I also have 36k in student loans, and that's on the low end. Having a job where I'm paid for my skills, experience, and job title means I can pay those off in <1.5 years and invest the difference in pay. What we're paid now has a huge impact on our future

What practice?

Management Consulting

Is this consulting?!? Looks like an audit/tax salary. Unfortunately, most campus offers are standardized and often firms really don’t negotiate those. Best thing you can do is survive to add a few bullets to the resume and jump

How do you know what's comfortable if this is your first job?

Market data in my city

I don't dispute that you should keep an eye out for a better salary. However, this is the time of life when you generally should be able to keep your expenses very low. For most people, you don't have kids, medical emergencies, or a house so if your spend is high then it's on discretionary items.

Honestly stop complaining about it. Move to a HCOL city and then ask for the increase. You honestly won’t feel better about it. Move to NYC pay the city tax, the rent and then see if they are truly making more. I started of making 45k a year in a tier 1/2 city and within 5 years I’ve more than triple my salary. I now make more than my friends from Ivy League schools that came out with much higher wages. Put in the work and the money will follow. 15k is nothing relative to your career.

Sounds like Audit. Unless you went to a horrible college

Now I start to smell entitlement. Put your head down, be humble and work hard for a year or two. Don’t be a brat.

What city? You must be in audit/tax. I’m an external hire senior 3 in tax making 115k in mpls and most of my peers are in the 80s. Mpls starts new grads out in the 54-58 range I believe. Which in my opinion isn’t enough to work downtown

I made 42k in DC at one point as a federal employee...and I survived.

60k in NYC lol

Big 4 Advisory/Consulting pay is pretty standardized.... at around 70s starting out. 50 has to be audit

Or are you a delivery center employee supporting advisory? That could be it

I’m MC staff supporting a long term, high visibility engagement

50k? This can’t be normal consulting...lowest I’ve heard of is 65k

Sounds like KPMG

This is shockingly low to me. I started in consulting over a decade ago for only a few K less. Negotiating approach aside, I assume you could get a competing offer that was at least 20-30% higher from any other Big 4 even at pure entry level (assuming it’s actually advisory / consulting).

50k is too low for advisory/consulting. K brings in campus hires at over 60k even in low CoL cities.

Hello, I applied for a controller job and they are considering me. I am currently a senior 3 but jumped firm and took a lower level to get in big 4. I think I can do the job but am freaking out now lol 😂. I am a CPA, I also have an MBA and a CFA , not that the MBA and CFA are relevant. I need help , how hard is the controller work?

Any insight into Mastercard Advisors? Have a new grad opportunity there. My start date at a B4 strat got postponed so decided to interview around. I'm interested in data + analytics and would want to go into industry eventually, but conflicted because unlike BA programs at CapOne or Visa, you're still working for an external client. Feel like there will be a broader variety of projects in B4 and while I'm casually interested in fintech, I don't want to get pigeonholed in FS so early on

Ex-Consulant here that now works for a big name Real Estate Investment Trust. Saw on LinkedIn that EY has an America’s REIT Leader. Didn’t know that much attention was paid to the REIT space. Are there really consulting teams dedicated to the REIT space in the Big 4? Love working for a REIT and would love to jump back to consulting if there were teams dedicated to the industry.
