Can a principal ask a teacher to use some of their planning time to write late students tardy slips when they get to school every single day? Keep in mind this is the only planning period the teacher gets and it’s only 50 minutes long.

They need to invest in the new electronic one. It has been a life saver for us. It tracks the tardies and tells a the students the step they are on and their consequence. The late students just type I. Their ID number and the computer does the rest.

But until then, it should be the office, right!?

We have a union and our contract states that we have a 30 min, duty free lunch (pre-COVID our principal worked out a schedule to give us 35 min) and it also states our prep time is for “preparation of lessons directly related to our job duties.” This language was added because teachers kept leaving the building to get coffee or run errands. Now, if we do any other duties in the building voluntarily (internal sub, help in office, cover playground duty) we fill out a time card and get paid for it. Yes, yes I love my district.

Same!!

If your contract specifies a planning period, then the principal can't do this unless the teacher agrees and is compensated for their time. Your Union Rep should be able to give you better guidance.

I contacted GAE.

Are you in the union? If so, go to them because your are entitled to a planning period. Also, keep a journal on how often this is happening.

likesmarthelpful

I am! Thank you so much for the help!

likeuplifting

It depends on your contract. If you still get the amount of prep that’s guaranteed in your contract then yes. If you don’t, then no.

Anyone who works during their planning period gets extended day.

This is abuse of pewter and no it’s not okay. If you say no, then what? He’s put you in a bad position and it’s unprofessional if not unethical. Talk to your union rep. Good luck!

likesmarthelpful

Good catch. Abuse of pewter sounds like something that happens in a convent.

funny

They can ask. Whether you do it or not is up to your union.

My GAE rep is all over it, and she’s angry.

Or principal would do something like that. I'm in SPED and we don't literally have a planning period. He is very focused on having things his way to the point of being rude. I gues he'd be considered a "micromanager." He even goes so far as to read all communications to be taken to the Superintendent's advisory committee and takes out what HE doesn't like

likesmart

Wow! So things the SPED teachers have to say don’t make it there? That’s so wrong.

If this ends of happening, make yourself scarce (bathroom) and do a really bad job of writing the slips (slow)

funny

Are you to write these from your room or the office?

like

It depends on your state, district and contract. If you are in a state with a union, talk to your union rep.

I contacted my GAE rep, and she is not happy.

like

Yes. In fact, I was once told that it is a privilege to have a planning period because we aren’t entitled to one. If they wanted, I was told, it could be taken away and another class assigned to me.

helpful

can i ask about your contract language for your 30 minute uninterrupted lunch? we have that language but our time is actually 22 minutes because admin counts the 4 minute passing time as "uniterrupted" even though it is not...would you mind sharing your language? thank you

Can they ask? Sure. But you can also say 'no.' I presume that prep time is in your contract... if they want to utilize it in some other way, they'd have to compensate you for that. With the shortage of subs, we're being paid extra any time we have to sub in for another teacher's classroom on our prep. I feel like being asked to take on other duties would fall into the same category.

helpful

If he is telling you, then you have to do it. It would then be up to your local union to grieve it.

like

Just say NO and see what happens. You won't be fired might get into a discussion about it. State your piece and move on.

helpful

You should not engage in any discussion with him without having a union rep present. He absolutely cannot get away with this power trip he's on. It is one thing to ask for help filling in when short handed, but he needs to spread it around, not focus solely on you.

like

Are other teachers being asked to do the same task?

like

Depends on your contractual obligations. Many admin will pull teachers for meetings, coverage etc if they can

I feel like pulling for help for coverage every once in a while is okay, but for a teacher to have to give up their planning EVERY day?

Yes.

Actually… according to my contract, they cannot. 😳
