If you have plus points you can try for an upgrade. Probably won’t get it but you 100% won’t get an auto upgrade without paying points or miles.
Polaris is only for passengers flying Polaris. So just united club or other non-first star alliance lounges are accessible
Small thing - Polaris Lounges are accessible to anyone on a star alliance business class ticket.
Pro
There are no long-haul upgrades unless you pay for them or use plus points, no way around this.
Polaris lounge is always only for Polaris customers, no confusion there bc having a long-haul business class ticket is the only way to get access
Very unlikely you’d get a complimentary upgrade, and if you’re in regular economy you’ll probably be too far down the list to clear a plus points upgrade.
If you pay for a premium economy seat and request an upgrade with plus points you go to the top of the upgrade list.
Good to know, thanks! Premium economy is $1,700 and business is $1,800 so I'll just pay for business if I decide to pull the trigger.
No and no. But if you’re Star gold then after going through security hit the Singapore lounge and have a Singapore Sling. Then, sure, whizz over to the United Club near the departure gate.
Thanks for the help 🐟! Looks like the answer is no complimentary upgrades and no to the Polaris lounge so I will have to stick it out in economy and enjoy the United Club at LHR (which I heard is very nice) as opposed to the Polaris lounge.
