Can anyone be a product manager? Is it a sink or swim job? How does difficulty compare to management consulting

No, can be sink or swim, a true PM role (not an over glorified project manager) will be much more impactful. In terms of difficulty, it’s a different kind of difficult. Consulting is like IB in that the difficulty is how much sweat you can put in and how many hours you can eat. PM usually requires both parts of the brain plus a strong personality type to herd cats together.

It’s a different challenge with some overlap with consulting. Some will find it easier, others harder.

Disagree with KPMG1. In a consulting project you actually have just one client at a time. As a (SaaS) PM you have only 1 product but hundreds of clients of all types, shapes, sizes and styles clamoring away. What one client loves, another hates. One client is loud, another silent but vital. Another rich, pushy and old-school thinking vs one that's modern and aligned with your vision but broke. You get the idea. That's just clients. Don't forget sales teams, Engg, leadership, the competition, etc.

Does anyone else feel like management likes to make staff the butt of every joke? It’s pretty much locker room talk every time staff spend time with management (lunch, travel, etc).

Deloitte is the only company of the big 4 to have a true management consulting shop. The others have advisory shops that they call consulting to be Kool. #BigD

For people managers, will you choose to downgrade to individual contributors at FAANG or continue being a people manager in traditional industries (e.g., finance, healthcare)?

Poll for the group - How common are PIPs at the various Big 4? Is it like the whole bottom 10% of everyone’s group or a once-in-a-while-this-person-is-dumb kind of thing? Have heard of quite a few within my group and wondering if it’s normal or something isn’t quite right.

Are folks getting RFE on H1 transfer to Big4? My question is specifically because initially your office location is the only one mentioned coz you don’t know what client you will be assigned?

I’m a new associate at BCG - started two weeks ago and I have no how idea if im doing well or not. I did a first informal feedback session last week and they told me I need to improve on slide making. Is this normal? I have a 6 months probation and I want to make sure I’m in a good position to pass. Am I being too nervous too soon?

What WFH upgrades have people made? I still see executives working off a laptop from their dining room table and wonder how they’ve done that for 18 months. I already had a decent desk/monitor, bought a bee webcam, and just upgraded by desk chair (should have done that a year ago!).
