Based in UK but also on a US roster. UK you can be fully salaried in the smaller shops but it’s generally a retainer (small but dependable money) and the commission on top once you’ve paid off your retainer. A few places editors are basically freelance / self employed and instead take the percentage (40-50%) of jobs total with no retainer safety net. US (this may be less accurate!) I’ve had a range of 18-25% of job total offered to me, but again thats operating as a freelancer so for those based there it may be different.
I think the value of an editing company depends on the type of person you are. I hate admin and talking about money so having someone responsible for my scheduling and billing makes me much more profitable, and having the name and support of a company has propelled my career forwards.
Of course the amount of money you bring in can vary hugely. I think an editor with a stable career should be billing a dependable £200-250k (and taking home £75-110k), a midrange editor in commercials hits around £300k in billing, top editor you should be looking at £400-500k
In terms of logistics of being paid, varies per edit house. When I’ve been on a retainer I got my commission the month I finished the job, now I’m somewhere with the ‘freelance style’ relationship and I can invoice when the first 50% has been paid by prod co (before job starts) and then invoice the remaining when the job has finished and everyone settled up (can be multiple months after I’ve finished the job). I’ve heard of one shop which does retainer system and you get the commission in 6-monthly pay outs.
Sorry if this has been too UK focused! Any other questions I’m happy to answer!
Would you mind naming some of these UK “smaller shops” and possibly some US based that would be similar level? Thank you.
It’s commission based. So you get a percentage. Can be based on the total budget or the profit or the job. Typically there’s a number you’re aiming to hit by end of year so you take a draw towards that but then if you don’t get there you owe money back (scary!). Have also heard of places doing it like you get a base and then commission on top, and the percentage goes up the more you bill. How much you make really varies depending on how much work is coming in and how good the budgets are and of course what your percentage is. I’m a freelancer now and my earning potential has actually been higher I’ve found, since I make a very good day rate and charge OT. (No OT or weekend rates on commission)
I interviewed at one of these places and was told that to make 150K your total billings have to be 1 million plus. Which just sounds crazy
That seems in line with my experiences. And budgets just don’t support that anymore.
