Can anyone explain how the partner/principal admission process works? And if you’re up for promotion to partner in Consulting, for example, do partners in Tax get to vote on you or have a say?

At my firm every partner theoretically has a veto - but unless you had massively pissed someone high up - I would doubt that some line tax partner could overrule your service line partners if they put you up. But overall you’ll start hearing 2-3 years out that you are in the running and around about December you will be asked to submit an application. Few interviews etc after that and long wait till you find out. That’s obviously my experience at my firm. Can’t comment on dt

EY1- that actually changed at EY this year- the sponsoring partner does diligence behind the scenes with the people the candidate works with, and those individuals indicate whether they are supportive or not. That replaces the full veto system from before. I know at KPMG (who tried to recruit me last year), the process still involved a full veto for all candidates system, but it’s pretty late in the process, and my understanding was that there shouldn’t be many surprises at that stage.

EY2. What you describe always happened. Veto I referenced was by way of advance notice and ability to comment - which I do not believe is used frequently maybe because you should have made point of view apparent earlier in process

Deloitte Tax has a more standardized process that will involve you building your business case and preparing for an oral presentation, specifically for partner or MD. Speak to someone who has been recently (1-4yrs) promoted or who is currently in the process. All partners are encouraged to vote but they would be expected to reach out to leadership in advance if they have issues with a candidate Another function is not likely to reach over to another candidate without a really strong case

What is the best way to approach my boss about a raise in this economy. I’m killing it at work, have taken on the work of my subordinate who left and am doing her work at a high quality as well, I’ve been working insane hours and am basically on call all the time. I’ve been recruited for jobs that pay 30-40k more than I am making now. I know I deserve it. However the economy is bad etc, so it’s not like money is flowing. I love my job and don’t want to quit, but want what I deserve.
