You should focus on your analytic and writing skills. It may get a little technical because you have to work in front of the computer most of the time. So you need to really have good computer skills too. A workforce analyst has similar job nature like with the HR. Since you have the experience on the field maybe that's why it was suggested that you give it a try.
I did this for a startup a few years ago. It entailed determining the best time to schedule people to meet business needs, identifying people who are being let go due to poor performance, determining if PTO requests are an issue, developing contingency plans in the event of a major disruption, quantifying top performers for raises and bonuses, and so on. My experience was broad due to the startup nature of the role, but it was also eye-opening.
Think of it very much as a high level role, you're going to be more of a storyteller and trying to make sense of the data rather than getting into the nitty gritty
