I would def know your in’s-and-out’s of provision prep. Should also be familiar (not expert) on non-income taxes depending on size of company.
I recently joined as a tax manager. It’s a speciality group and they didn’t ask me any technical questions. It didn’t really feel like an interview (any of them) just conversations where I shared a bit about me and my background in tax and they told me about the firm and answered questions I had about the group. Perhaps just the conversation showed I was familiar with the topics but I don’t recall any direct technical questions.
Sounds like a breeze lol
If you work on partnerships: I had one interview which was a simple case study: IS, BS, stmt of capital provided, and a few other notes. From that, set up the federal tax journal entries, to get to taxable income. Then allocate between the partners and provide partner tax capital. All of this with no template - create from scratch with a blank excel worksheet.
Sheeesh that brutal man.
Allocation methodology. Explaining Aggregation, targeted, waterfall calculations. If your in the Hedge funds sphere, know various testing (wash sales, straddles, constructive sales) extra points if you reference code sections.
Thank you! So this was for a partnership tax manager position, correct?
Last year I was interviewed for Manager and all I had was the general discussion and questions mainly from my resume but it was just a casual talk about my tax background with 3 different partners so I think it also depends upon how you go about it, just be relaxed and don’t freak out. I was honest about something that I didn’t know about and was up front.
