Can anyone provide input on Grant Thornton’s SALT practice? Considering leaving Big 4 SALT for GT, but want to gather more input before making a decision.

My guess is that it’s going to depend on the office, like most firms. Anecdotally, my friend from SALT left KPMG for GT and hated it even more than KPMG (our SALT people are strangely clique-y). He left after holding out for a year. One thing that’s not awesome is the unlimited PTO. He had to jump through hoops to get approval and then when you leave you obvi soupy don’t get paid out. My husband worked in audit at GT and had an unpleasant experience, but once again, it’s just two people’s experiences and I’m sure people enjoy it

I’m in the Southeast. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me an IM.

Depends on the role and office. Indirect SALT is different than traditional SALT compliance. Both have their pros and cons. When I was at GT the salt compliance group was pretty solid in my region - although pretty much every other aspect of the firm was just awful.

Agree entirely with EY 1, while I cant comment on SALT, in general for tax, technology and training was crap/nonexistent,benefits weren't great, pay was OK at best. Hours might be better at a small office, but larger offices will work just as hard as big 4 (perhaps harder because teams are smaller). And truth be told this was a gamble, I'd still have 80+ hour weeks every other busy season. For whatever reason, this firm still managed to have good people running it down to the manager level. So I will say that the people were great and much more down to earth / less full of themselves than big 4. My 2c: You can do better.

I have just completed my first of 12 CIMA exams and I can’t seem to motivate myself to study at the expense of my side hustle when I don’t see myself in Consulting long term. I know I will gain some valuable lessons from CIMA for future ventures but it is a 3 year qualification alongside a demanding job with minimal downtime. Should I try and qualify or focus on saving money and my side hustles? Also, do I need to qualify to work as a consultant in Big 4 or can I opt not to sit exams?

For those of you that left big 4 accounting to do MBA, did you leave at Senior level (3-4 YOE) or at the Manager level (5 YOE). I would assume to leave at manager level would be more ideal as when you come back to the workforce you should at the very least be ready to come in at manager or above at your next job? Thoughts?

If you’re at B4, would you get any serious consideration at M7s if you tried to matriculate right when you hit the 3 year mark (apply at 2)? I hear that a lot of MBB people do this but the standard timeline for B4 seems to be to matriculate at 4 YOE.
