Do you have AAA? They have a relocation service as a part of their membership. They will collect quotes for you, vet the companies, set up consultations and literally plan this aspect of your move. And because they offer a type of warranty, if things go wrong, AAA works to reimburse any issues. I used them when moving from Denver to NC a couple of years ago and it took away so much stress.
I’m sorry but they literally don’t exist. You’re always working with local crews (usually independent contractors) so no matter what company you use, it’s a total crapshoot.
If you’re worried about outright scams, make sure you check reviews and BBB complaints. Bc there are usually many.
Godspeed!
My parents moved 6 times in the past 15 years, both domestically and internationally, with different moving companies and have had things stolen, lost, and broken every time… unfortunately I’ve yet to hear of a successful move from anyone where everything went perfectly. Agree with above to check BBB, get the insurance, but otherwise, you just keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best. Treat the moving team well with coffee/light meals and maybe they’ll take more care with your things and possibly not steal things, but we have done that and still had them pocket items
I prefer UHaul over Ryder or other trucks. Nothing like a good ‘ole self-move.
Seriously though, don’t use any van line with the name “Spartan” or owned by a Josh Hall in Florida. They held my goods hostage and extorted money from me on a cross country move.
Expect the prices to be inflated. There is some wiggle room with the prices so you can say tell them that you can’t afford that and see what happens. Moved from TX to CO. I was being quoted from 4-9k. I moved from MA to TX the prior year and it was less than 3.5k. I ended up driving a uhaul myself but hired help for loading and unloading
Bellhop movers. A little more expensive but mine was the only stuff on the truck. Moving crew was a few local guys and did great.
I hire Craigslist movers to load up a uhaul then drive the uhaul my self and when I get to my location, I hire another set of Craigslist movers to unload
Loaded and drove the uhaul from the Midwest to the South East and it was a 12 hour drive (a little over 700 miles as well) that we did straight through. I was terrified my stuff would not make it, be held, or rummaged through along the way. And it was cheaper to do it myself.
If you happen to be moving to/from Minneapolis I’d highly recommend Good Stuff Moving in Maplewood, MN
Thank you very much.
Morse Moving/Allied Van Lines 888-616-2810. Ask for Rich Leonard. Tell him someone on Fishbowl recommended him.
We moved 5 times in 5 years including 3 cross-country moves. The best option in my view is to use UBox services from Uhaul and just hire local crews to help you load and unload. Uhaul can take care of the shipping, which is cheaper and on time most of the time and they can hold the UBoxes for you for a small fee.
