Can anyone share their experience of applying to a PhD program? I am strongly considering it at some point, and am curious how others experience has been.

My experience is don’t do it!!!

Don’t do it, if you’re doing it for the Benjamins, sure. But that’s not the point in an education for some people. Doing a PhD means getting to dedicate a period of your life to literally expanding the scope of human knowledge. That’s pretty awesome all by itself, and if that’s compelling enough to make up for lost wages, then do it. I got a PhD with no intention of going into academia, and in a subject that has little to nothing to do with my current work, and I wouldn’t trade the experience for the world.

OP to answer your question, applying to a PhD program is going to be slightly different depending on what your field of study is. I ran recruiting for my STEM PhD program a few years ago. In order of importance we looked at 1) research experience, 2) undergraduate degree / grades, 3) GRE scores, 4) personal statement. After we extended interview offers - as in consulting - it was all about performance during a day long series of one in ones and a panel style interview with program leadership. For some fields of study where your PhD mentor is decided prior to entrance, the process will be completely specific to that person.

I had no background in the field, no research experience, and a poor GPA in my BS, and I applied to a highly competitive PhD program. With very high GRE and GMAT scores and 2 years of getting to know the faculty by working through an MBA I was accepted. Never would have had a chance without that exposure.

Thanks all - for reference - I look at getting a PhD as my own personal accomplishment, not to get into academia necessarily. If it helps with work/having a good job, that’s a plus, but since I already have a masters it’s just that final step..

I seriously doubt some of the recruiters and hiring managers in the big4s now a days, their decisions w.r.t. designation and pay depends on their mood and willingness to work on a particular day.. They will interview for X designation and then will ghost you and then will come back with a lower level and pay saying would you be interested?🤣 Why would somebody be interested to join at a lesser pay, when he/she is currently well in his/her job and just found the opportunity more interesting...

I’d love some help thinking through this. I’m currently renting for $1600 base ($1800 total) and live in the least desirable part of town, and expect it to raise to about $2k/month. I was planning to buy my first property in the city and Airbnb part of it, but it will take me about a year to save up the cash (~$500k starting). Eventual goal is to move more rural but trying to build to FI. I found a property in my ideal dream location for $280k but it needs work, and can’t Airbnb it. Continued
