I moved to my SOs hometown in the middle of nowhere GA and it's terrible. There are zero things to do but go to chain restaurants and we have no friends here. The types of people you meet are also the less ambitious types usually (since everyone else left to big cities) so you may not have anything in common with them. We've only been here for 4 months but I'm so done with it already. My light at the end of the tunnel is we're going to move to NY in the spring. However I'm childless and neither of us have graduate school debt so it may make more sense for you given your situation.

I grew up in a place where I was the only POC for miles around and you realize that most people are afraid of you based on stereotypes that the media/news portrays. There will be some people who pretend to be open to you, but aren’t. People who are genuinely curious and kind hearted. And people who will never let you in. Get ready to be stared at. You have to remember that some people have never had the opportunity leave the area or travel outside the country. My mom didn’t speak English so she got a lot of people treating her like she was dumb, but she would always try to be kind. People came around eventually. Love and kindness can change minds, not hatred and pride. Also, get ready to not eat any delicious food for a while 🤭. Use it as an opportunity to get ingredients shipped to you and cook delicious food for your family! Those were my favorite memories as a kid with my mom. Make your home your sanctuary and fun/safe space!

I truly believe children are taught to hate. I always knew whose parents were racist because their kids displayed that racism without a filter. Unfortunately, yes I have experienced racism growing up from other children, but my parents always insisted on leading with kindness and to fight hatred/ignorance with love. My teachers weren’t really actively for me (but not really against me either). A good example is that there was an opportunity to take the SAT as a middle schooler for gifted kids and go to a national convention. My brother never received that info because his teacher deemed him not gifted and told some other students. My mom found out about it and enrolled him. He actually ended up being nationally ranked above all the other students and got an invitation (and eventual scholarship) to Phillips Exeter. Not overtly racist, but clearly my brother was light years ahead in “gift” and anybody who actually spoke to him knew that. The teacher just wouldn’t give him a chance. OP, if you’re asking these questions then I would say that you’re one of the good ones! Just keep advocating for your kid and teaching love despite hard circumstances! My parents made the difference for me growing up and I am forever grateful!

A couple things - I think given how young your child is and your plan to be there less than 5 years, it’s unlikely your child will face the worst of child bullying ect. I would plan to move before they really start school, but that sounds totally doable. I think if you see this as a time to really focus on your family and marriage - get a nice place with a good kitchen, cook a home, get into outdoor activities and things at home instead of a life driven by friends and “fun activities” like NYC. To me, doing something like this with my spouse while my kid was young would have benefits to just slowing down and focusing on personal interests and family. West Virginia and the general area has some beautiful hiking, rafting/kayaking, other outdoor stuff that I would be able to get into, perhaps growing more of my own food, really learning to cook, and not having all the time suck distractions my beautiful, exciting cities provide. It’s not ideal, but there’s a bright side you could enjoy especially just for a few years.

This is the perspective I’m thinking. It will be nice to be exposed to so much greenery and lakes/river nearby. Cooking skills have increased at home since covid so seems like I could make our home our sanctuary.

How long would you have to stay there to pay off the debt? I probably wouldn’t mind it for a couple of years for the financial gain because you can always move back. I spent 2 years in a small town in MO as one of the few black families when I was in HS and it’s an experience. But I’ll say being military base adjacent was a bit more helpful in adjusting to small town life (think one stop light). You learn what places you should and shouldn’t hang out in and just avoid those areas (aka small towns nearby that have a history of targeting people of different races). But some of my really good friends have come from that area and some people just haven’t been exposed to different cultures so it’s new to them and you just have to give it some time.

Based on the comp offer it would be around 2 years to pay off the debt.

There’s nothing wrong with the place where I am. So, how do I evaluate the offer?

Other than higher pay (I didn’t become a lawyer to get rich 🤣) what is the benefit of working for BigLaw, or private practice in general? As a government lawyer, I make 6 figures, have excellent benefits, no billable hours requirements, more time off than I know what to do with (including mental health days), a pension, a 401(K), option to chose whether to WFH or not, no weekend work, no working before 8am or after 5pm. It seems like so many lawyers in private practice are unhappy.

I left MBB in 2018 when our first was born and joined a small firm with little travel and a lot of flex (at lower pay, of course). We are expecting our second in August, and I just got a job offer for an awesome internal corp strategy role that would require me to travel again. Not weekly, but 50-75%. It’s an awesome opportunity but I also really love being there for the day to day with my kid and want to be equally there for the next one. Any advice?

Advice needed! I am currently in a toxic work environment making $60k (commission structure is okay, no 401k match, in office 4 days/week and 10 days PTO), I am in the final rounds for a role at an awesome company with great culture and upward mobility, but the pay is $55k (equity, uncapped commission, remote, and unlimited PTO). I think I would love the role, and I’m sure the total comp with equity and commission would be very similar to my current role, but I am still hung up the lower salary
