Ah, I see you too have experienced the joy of NY putting its hand in your wallet no matter how far away you live. Enjoy!

File a return with NY state as a non-resident.

like

Tell them you need them to correct your home location so you do not continue paying taxes where you do not live or perform work. You'll get that money back at tax time (not ideal, but that's where you are right now), but they need to get the state withholding correct.

That part has now been corrected.

This is right. If your office is in New York, New York’s state laws treat tele-commuting as working from New York

Your first question is answered by your second sentence. You were charged because the employer incorrectly reported you as a NY resident. To get your money back from NY you will need to file a tax return with the state of NY showing you are not a resident, so that the money is returned to you (hence “tax returns”). The firm doesn’t have your money, the state of NY does. You can file with NY now, but given that they will require a copy of your Federal tax filing as well, it will be easier to wait for the normal filing period in the spring.

@Assoc that’s irrelevant, OP already said that it was an classification mistake that has been corrected.

Long shot - anyone have an idea of comp for SM (L6) internal finance roles at Deloitte?

like

Okay 🐠 I need your input on two scenarios I have. 1 - Join EY cloud strategy as SM working under two partners and with 2 other SMs (will be partners in the next 2-3 years) that I know well; with a fast track to partner for myself. Or 2 - Join BCG DV at EM level and work towards partner level there. Completed final interview last week and got positive feedback. I don’t think there’s a wrong answer, but I have the EY offer in hand, comp difference is negligible.
