Can anyone speak to countering an offer to lateral? Trying to figure out if countering an offer is okay or if that would start off the relationship on the wrong foot.

My current firm low balled me on their initial offer when I was lateraling in. I asked if they could move on salary and bonus and sure enough they did. They understand that it's ultimately business conversation at the end of the day. If they don't or if they get pissy about it, I would question whether that's somewhere I'd want to work.

I counter offered. I told them what it would take to get me over the line and they gave it to me.

Senior associate. Happy to share in DMs

I countered and had offer pulled. So it does happen occasionally, but it seems rare.

That said, if the firm isn’t lockstep (tough to negotiate with lockstep firms) then a lack of willingness to negotiate may be a red flag. So it can be nice to know that up front. I would come in with market data and a business case to support your ask. But even that didn’t help in my scenario.

Your job is to negotiate-asking for what you won’t will not make you look bad.

Anyone on H1 who just got laid off. Looks like the tough days are here. What options do the laid off people have? Given the lack of hiring and right now... will appreciate any inputs.

A majority of society tends to stick around to things because they are influenced by "enough" people doing something similar. Hence, they start living someone else's life instead of theirs.

Think about what you want for yourself, what's important, what you value. Then, ask yourself. Do I have these things? Am I living by the things that are important to me?

Any insight on Husch blackwell or Greenberg Traurig in Denver?

How long after an interview should I lose hope? Going on three weeks now. I know firms were busy with OCI so hopefully that was the reason for the delay. Any insights?

First review is coming up. Tips for survival? I fully expect it to be terrible. I am not happy here, I never have been, I don't want that to come across in the review, and I just want to make it out of the meeting with a small amount of grace. My plan is to just nod along and say thanks, will work on. I am also insanely busy right now and this is the last thing I want to deal with.

Is it ok to respond to recruiters from your work email or are people watching, and if they are, does that even matter?

I encourage everyone to go in house. More firm opportunities for those of us left behind.

Anyone in Private Client Services/T&E that can speak to how billable requirements are approached in BL for that practice area? Often hear billables are harder to come by than in, say, M&A or Lit. Is there a greater understanding for failure to hit hours in this area? Potentially making the move from boutique firm where minimum has been 1700 (but 165 hour months are common). Offers have been from Am Law 50-100s requiring 1900 and 1950. Don’t wanna accept just to get recession fired. Thanks.

I am a junior associate. A senior just asked if I had “time for a quick call” tomorrow. What are the odds this is something bad? I can’t think of what that would be, but I’m paranoid.

Are we at the point yet where class of 21 can lateral without there being red flags for “leaving too early”? If not, how much longer?

Recruiters would seriously say anything. I was just told an AM50 firm would be fine with having me sit in the office in my city and work remotely if I don’t want to commute. I just did a simple Google search and that firm does not even have an office location anywhere near my city lol.

First year here… a few months in and I still feel like I’m still consistently out of reach of really understanding the legal issues in some of my more complex cases. This equals me feeling stupid whenever I am asked to research an issue and my conclusion is basically wrong or lacks nuance—normal for a newbie or am I messing up here?

Going through a “mid”-life crisis (single 31 y.o.) and wanting to drop everything and move from ATL to NYC. Will I regret this in big law and have no life? I mainly want a more fast-paced, city vibe but want to be able to enjoy it. Do NYC associates have flexibility with WFH?

Interested to hear any success stories about M&A attorneys at middle market firms (firm is 600+ but is regional and only does middle market transactions) and from an unranked law school finding an M&A in house role. I want to go in house but can’t fathom doing commercial transactions for the rest of my career but M&A in house gigs for obvious reasons tend to be at Fortune 500 companies that almost always require top credentials. Should I give up? Is my resume just going to the shredder?

People who have had their moving expenses or signing bonus clawed back: When did your firm tell you they were going to be clawing back?

My unpopular opinion: more mid-levels need to be asked to leave. I try my best to be patient and get that juniors make mistakes and have a steep learning curve. But I am working with 4th-6th years who don’t respond to emails, can’t produce written product that doesn’t need substantial revision (basically rewritten), ignore directions/deadlines, have terrible attitudes, etc. They haven’t changed over years despite repeated trainings/attempts to help them. Is this true at your firm?

You ever reply with a confirmation question, but then realize that confirmation probably wasn’t needed at all. But now you find yourself stuck because you’ve put into writing that there is an outstanding question and if you send the docs out, it will seem like you just sent them without waiting for a reply. Just me? Cool 😑
