Can anyone tell me about the standard setting group at the big 4? i.e. who sets trainings, writes papers, etc.? I'm a nerd at heart (nonbig 4 PA) and very curious. Would they ever hire outside people?

We have national offices the write the firm’s interpretations of accounting guidance. Is that what you mean?

Have you thought about Technical Accounting Consulting?

Yes - at my mid-size firm I am part of the group who comments on proposed auditing/accounting standards, set documentation standards for work papers, and propose/teach internal and external trainings. These are the things I enjoy doing the most, but at a regional firm these opportunities are limited and have a big downside - more non billable hours means smaller bonus and less likely to become partner. Does the big 4 have the same attitude?

Director 1 - I didn't know that existed. At a midsize firm being an auditor means you are basically a technical accounting consultant. Our clients just aren't as sophisticated as what I imagined Big 4 has

TAC is client facing consulting. Lots of work around 606 and 842 right now. RSM is hiring

TAC has a lot of former auditors but do not audit work. Mostly targets non audit clients as the some of the work is independence impairing

Interesting - I will keep that in mind. Seems like the ideal spot for my interests... The question would be if I'd be given a shot, coming from a smaller firm.

Senior up for promo to manager in audit in next year. Have decided I do not want to be an auditor. Which of these paths do you think is best? 1. Stay 1 more year, exit to industry with manager title. 2. Move to advisory internally, but most likely would have to do one more year in audit and move as audit manager to advisory sr 3. Exit immediately into industry to try for accounting manager title / senior accountant or sr fin analyst 4. Exit immediately to advisory senior at another big 4 firm

Coming from a big 4 - Can we mention the names of the clients we have worked with over the years when interviewing? I am at a boutique agency now working with some people who came from Accenture and some other consulting companies and I noticed that they will reference their clients by brand name. If it is a past project and you do not give any client sensitive information is it OK to share the names of the brands that you've worked with in your previous role? What's standard?

TO THE STRATEGISTS crafting your next big brief: how about we do something else besides “Inspiring You to be the Best You, Also Passion.” Maybe show your client the FIFTY other companies doing that exact strategy, and tell them not everything can be inspiring. Toyota for instance—not inspiring. Yogurt—not inspiring. How about we not inspire any “passions” or build any “worlds around you” for a while—give it a rest, maybe THINK OF SOMETHING ELSE and see how it goes?
