Kellogg. I’d think of social impact/sustainability as your domain area, and your skills/brand as what you bring to that domain. Yale SOM is a third tier-ish MBA program compared to Kellogg as an M7. You’ll want the skills and brand name to gain access to the best domain-specific roles. Kellogg is probably the better way to do that
Guys- important lesson it took me forever to learn about mba programs and schools in general: it’s NOT about the ranking, it’s about the brand. So what that Yale is a few places behind Kellogg? I can tell you as an MBA from a top tier school it does not matter. The brand recognition does. People recognize Yale and they recognize SOM and as someone in the social impact field I can definitely tell you that SOM has a lot more alumni around your chosen field than Kellogg. There are deeper networks and more opportunities at Yale in sustainability and social impact for sure
I am biased, I went to Kellogg. I was also considering between Yale SOM and Kellogg for similar reasons. Having gone to Kellogg, I was surprised by Kellogg’s social impact and sustainability opportunities (including classes offered and extracurricular activities). I will say that Kellogg is a top tier school and the brand recognition is greater, but ultimately you have to follow your gut. The one main difference is that Yale has the School of Forestry dual degree, so if you want to take classes there, you have that option. DM me if you want to chat more. Congrats on both schools!! You have some great options!
The FES (Forestry school) is also amazing. My fiancé went there. He’s in environmental consulting. He sill uses the network 10 years later and what he learned in those classes (which is shocking to me). If you go to Yale, certainly take some classes from this and other schools. I’m jealous - I want to go back to school too and enjoy all of the richness offered there! (I didn’t go to Yale but loved the MBA I did focused on social impact)
Go where you feel most comfortable and with the school that best aligns with your goals.
Kellogg is just a better overall school. SOM is only in the T30 because it's Yale.
D1, you should go where you feel best at. I'm not sure who's better at social impact because I wasn't aware either of those schools had that as a focus, so I was assuming all else equal, Kellogg. For Social Impact, I think of Haas, Ross, Minnesota, Duke.
Yeah SOM is for the do gooders
As a local new haven area resident (and have friends who went through Yale SoM), I can affirm your thinking. Also, the immediate area has a thriving nonprofit community for you to get connected into.
For what it’s worth, I personally graduated from northwestern and think both institutions are excellent. At the end, you’ll have to gauge for yourself where you can be authentically yourself and immerse yourself in a deep learning experience (not just academically) with people you can build lasting relationships with
Kellogg is more prestigious than YSOM and probably has a more connected senior leadership network (for what it’s worth) but you seem to want to go to YSOM so follow your gut
This right here. I think KELLOGG has the better brand and prestige but your heart is set on SOM :). You will be setup for success either way but Kellogg will help out more if down the road you decide sustainability isn’t what you want to do in life :)
Did you visit? Ultimately it’ll depend on the “vibe” you get from your future classmates
Nope. Trust your gut.
OP can I DM? I’m interested in both these programs, similarly focused on social impact, curious to hear about your profile, etc.
Of course!
I’ve already posted above but as someone in the social impact space who did an MBA to pivot into it, i can definitely affirm that there are more opportunities and deep networks in these areas at Yale SOM. Lots of cool programs and innovative thinkers coming from there. I interned with some and met many others along the way in jobs, case competitions etc. It’s the place to go for what you want. If you wanted to go Fortune 500 or consulting or something more standard then Kellogg is a great choice but for your wishes Yale is right on the money. My perspective is the best schools for social impact MBA are: Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, Georgetown, Columbia, NYU, INSEAD. These are in no particular order and there may be some others too but those are the ones that come to mind
OP can I DM? Facing the exact same choice and interested to hear where you’re leaning
Yeah of course!
