AD1 isn’t wrong...at all. Negotiation isn’t about “if they like you, they’ll pay” that’s not realistic. It’s also not a guarantee in this current market.
You could just throw a higher number out there and hope they want you so badly they go with it. Or you could go into that negotiation with a strong argument as to why you deserve more money, something like the scope of the job changing (such as the role involving more mentorship, involving multiple clients, etc) as AD1 suggested and solidify why they like you so much in the first place.
It would depend on the circumstances. If you have a complete understanding of the job and provided a number you should stick to it. If the job scope changed and you feel that your initial number is inadequate then it is reasonable to course correct.
Yes of course. AD1 is wrong. If they want you, that’s the best time to negotiate
APD: are you a widget or a special butterfly? Best to act like a butterfly and get paid like a butterfly. Being a better widget is a dime a dozen these days.
Also, I’m right just because hiring people is time intensive and cost intensive... so when you find someone you want to commit to, that’s when you’ll push your own org to make it happen.
Trust me, I hire a lot of people. You gotta get the fish on the hook before you begin pulling your line in
