Take on less deals.
You will realize later in your career that nothing is as urgent as people make it look. Prioritize what you want and let others adjust to your schedule.
This is difficult to assess without more details. I fee like whether billing 2100 hrs is a lot or not is besides the point. I assume you sometimes stay up until 4-5 but not always. What practice group are you in? Are these tasks relatively simple or tasks that involve deeper analysis, i.e. drafting a memo/doing a legal research as supposed to doc review (which still could take long)? And most importantly, are you communicating clearly what you are working on when you get a new assignment? This may not work for all groups, but sometimes it’s better for partners to figure out which work should take priority. If that doesn’t work, and they don’t seem to hear your concern, then it’s probably time to move.
Um your place sounds extra crazy OP, I definitely don't think is sustainable...you to need plan to leave. Try to pretend like there's drs appts/something medical as it's harder to push back on
1/ have you considered asking your boss for a separate call to discuss your workload - then you can explain that you are up until 4am every night and feel that you can’t do a good job unless you can remove a couple of deals. Some partners are terrible but most partners would certainly sympathize with an associate up until 4am every night.
2/ hopefully our job board can be helpful for you. Lateralhub.com. One of the reasons I started it is to allow associates to see who is hiring and apply for lateral jobs directly, since the current process is way too inefficient/time consuming for busy associates. Feel free to DM me anytime I’m happy to connect.
Recruiter here. Yes, it definitely sounds like you need to leave, likely to a firm that has more support to spread the work around. First, don’t even get ahead of yourself about having time to interview- you don’t have any interviews yet! First step is talking with a recruiter (me or anyone else) who can talk you through some options and then handle the back end of things like getting you submitted to firms. Assuming you get some interviews, the recruiter will work with your crazy schedule and manage the firms to make sure you’re interviewing in a way that works for you so you can put your best foot forward. If that means taking two or three days off in a row at some point for some mysterious illness or other reason to get every long interview done, then that may be a solution. But initial interviews are only 30 mins to an hour max and usually remote- we can work around your schedule without any stress on your end.
If you want to chat, feel free to message me. Happy to speak at night or over the holiday, while you eat a meal, whatever. Basically, whatever makes your life easier without adding to your already very full plate.
Grind out your current deals and just say you’re at capacity if someone asks you to take on something else. Manage your workload. You just need to gain the confidence in saying “no”. Trust me, it’s ok and nothing will happen to you.
If you say that the last associate who tried to set boundaries was fired, you need to leave. Let something fall by the wayside to interview. It doesn’t matter - you’re getting out of there anyway and, by the way they sound, they won’t like you after you leave anyway even if you were the perfect associate until then.
UGh I am so sorry to hear that. The best you can do is the best you can do. Prioritize what you can and then work as fast as you can to get everything done.
