The goal of every interview should be to transform it into a fluid conversation

There is art to articulating a well prepared story in a conversational way where it doesn’t seem rehearsed

Same exact thing happened to me. No idea, maybe the flow is better when you’re more natural.

I find if the story is too well rehearsed it becomes boring, don't know if that is intended. I have had people tell me how they knew back when they were 5 years old that they wanted to do problem solving for a living. Pretty awkward story. However, I passed them to the next round, but gave feedback to maybe rethink how to tell the motivational stories. If you rock the case and the story is logical, a too well prepared story will not be a blocker. Maybe different angle: when I prepared too much for interviews they never worked out for me. Got dinged everywhere. Then I stopped caring (in the recruiting season the year later) and suddenly I got an offer as I was quite relaxed and had fun in the process, rather than trying to make everything perfect. With that offer at a tier 2 firm I had a solid fallback, and all the other interviews worked out as well. Long story short: I don't think it was the degree to which the story was rehearsed...

like

It depends on how you told your stories. I prefer someone sounding smooth and natural much more than someone sounding rehearsed

You shouldn’t have to rehearse something that you did. I usually just have broad bullet points to jog my memory and speak extemporaneously to sound more genuine

I always do very well in the interviews where I’m not that interested in the job. Just made it to final at EY when I was just going through the motions and talking to the interviewers like they were my pals

I generally can tell when it’s a canned story and will try to move you off of it ASAP.

I’m an immigrant with H1B. Been wanting to get out of my firm so badly but every time I apply outside, I start getting dragged into work at my current firm.I was going through some pretty rigorous interviews (I failed them) and have been in a slump since. Meanwhile my current firm keeps dumping work on me and I can’t find the time to apply outside. Anyone been through something similar? I’m losing hope. The politics is also so toxic, they started screwing me over since my last performance review.

In house interviews: I finished a final round of interviews and was expecting a final decision after the interviews. Rather than yes or no, the recruiter told me that the feedback is positive but they need to interview one more candidate to compare since I am the first one interviewed. And they wanted to add one more meeting with their new team member starting next week. Is this common and what’s the best way to deal with this unexpected message? Thanks!

I’ve put on about 20 lbs during covid lockdowns and haven’t lost a pound since. My SO loves me but (and I agree) has always been big about us keeping appearance and weight in check, first for our health but also for overall attraction. His take is if a disease somehow made me put on weight there’s not a comment he would make but in this case it’s really bad exercise and diet habits. I don’t disagree but I’ve never been so far from my target weight that I just don’t know where and how (cont)

My boss loves to have every warm body possible in pitch meetings, even people who aren’t working on it. He will slack you out of the blue and expect you to drop everything to just sit there and make the team look “impressive.” Why are people like this? Don’t clients see right through it? Is it actually impressive to have 10+ people in the room if only half of them participate? 😑 it’s such a waste of everyone’s time.

Just joined a smaller firm who uses Paychex for their 401k provider. I noticed they do not offer too many options for funds to invest in and seems lower end than my prior Schwab 401k offered. 1) Anyone have experience with Paychex and have similar observations? 2) I’m leaning towards doing enough 401k pretax contribution on Paychex to get the company match and then do the rest as a Roth IRA to obtain better investments. Any other options I’m not thinking of?
