I think it’s really difficult to do this because even if each firm has a culture, different practice groups within firms and different lawyers within practice groups have different styles, clients, and personalities.

I would say go to chambers associate and read about firms there though realize most of it is marketing gloss. Broadly you can tell what kind of life you’ll have by the required billables and the kinds of clients.

The worst past about being a senior associate is I have the responsibilities of a partner but also still get associate tasks. For example, I have a two-week jury trial coming up with damages in the mid 7-figures yet I’m still being given tedious discovery and answers to prepare on partner’s cases when I don’t have any time, at the expense of my own cases.

Serious billing question - if during the course of the day, you first receive an email from Client A at say 11:10am and you read it, you then respond to it at 12:20pm. You get another email at 2pm from Client A and respond immediately. The next email comes in at 4pm, you read it and respond only at 4:30pm. None of the email responses take more than 3-5mins. You are working on matters for other clients at all other times during the day. How much are you billing for Client A?

Will partners be upset if I take the bar exam for a jurisdiction we don’t have any offices in?

Hi all! I’m looking to transition to a mid-sized/big law firm in NYC upon completion of my bankruptcy clerkship in Seattle in three months. New York barred and interested in bankruptcy/restructuring work. Graduated from Emory with honors. Anyone know of firms looking to hire in the near future? Any recommendations/tips/advice on how best to approach the process. I’ve never actually worked for a firm in the past, so I’m a bit foreign in how best to attract the larger firms. Thanks!

Need to tell my building this week if I’m renewing my lease. My firm currently has a target date of returning to the office early fall. Anyone else hear anything about return dates? I don’t want to renew and waste money if we’re not actually going back until next year, but also don’t want to leave to just have to come back in 2 months.

Kind of niche question here but under NY CPLR, if a plaintiff files a MTD/MSJ, and then the defendants file opposition papers containing information that the court had previously ordered to be kept under seal, would you a) file a reply asking to seal/strike the opposition papers or b) file a separate OTSC since you’re now seeking additional relief not sought in the original motion?

How much info about your weekend plans do you share with the partners above you? It’s one thing if there’s a deadline approaching and you’re expecting to work, but got an assignment yesterday in the midst of a lot of preplanned personal engagements. Is it okay for me to just say “not today, but can do Sunday” or do I need to fall on my sword and either cancel plans or do it late at night after I’m back from the show? I made the mistake of saying Will do without thinking it through

So if you pass the MPRE with flying colors that allegedly measures “ethical competence” you’re likely not a danger to the public, but if you fail the bar exam that allegedly measures and protects the public from malpractice you’re a danger to the public? I had a big laugh today. 😂
