Hey I have a story 🙋🏽♀️
When I was 19, me and 2 girl friends were standing around a property around 11pm just to talk outside since it was good weather. Apparently we weren’t allowed to stand there and a cop came by to ask us what we were doing. We said we were just talking and that we didn’t know we weren’t supposed to be there. The cop got super weird and made us get on our knees, and in the process groped me. He checked out licenses and then eventually let us go.
It was a super weird experience and shows that even when you comply, cops can be inappropriate. This could be one random cop, but to me, cops abusing their power seems like a trend.
As an Indian woman, I can’t imagine the fear black men go through. Someone needs to hold cops accountable. It doesn’t matter if someone resists arrest. We’ve seen instances where (white) people have been active shooters and still arrested safely.
Let’s not forget about the reason why he was being arrested. His warrant (27-CR-19-29850. Look it up) was for a felony assault on his landlord. He choked her out twice, held a gun to her head, and stole $820 of cash from her bra. This is the same guy that resisted arrest and had expired car tags. So, let’s look at all the facts and not the fake news about the air fresheners on his mirror or about how the warrant was sent to the wrong address. Those are all probably false.
EY9 yes, obviously. The only reason they didn't fire her immediately was for due process and to avoid getting sued. She resigned promptly (noting at one point the city was sitting on it and maybe still are because they wanted to fire her instead). Everyone agrees that she should not be a cop again and that she shouldn't have shot him. Where people disagree is that this was racially motivated and part of a larger problem.
I also don't understand how an experienced officer could confuse the two, but it would be even more difficult to understand why she would intentionally shoot him. She lives in a blue collar city further out from Minneapolis and chose to work in the more diverse Brooklyn Center for decades without incident. She had no reason to shoot him intentionally and watching the video it was clear she intended to use her taser and felt immediate remorse. She will lose her job (rightfully so), likely serve jail time (rightfully so), lose her career and possibly pension and have to relocate her family, and have to live the rest of her life knowing she killed someone with her mistake. To me that is justice, but clearly it isn't enough for others.
If the fact that a police officer can be so untrained and ill-prepared so as to mistake a gun for a taser doesn't outage and terrify you, I seriously have concerns for your judgment.
By “Rookie Cop” do you mean “24-year Veteran?”
26 years on the force. Not a rookie cop.
While there is no arguing the officer made a horrendous mistake, the body cam video clearly shows the man lunging back inside his vehicle while being placed under arrest (and rightfully so since he had an outstanding warrant). He could have grabbed a weapon and killed the officers. Fight or flight...the officers nerves and adrenaline kicked in and they drew the wrong weapon.
With that said, play stupid games win stupid prizes. Don’t run from the police.
If we are making murder illegal now, you better throw in armed robbery, rape, and human trafficking too. I just wish we thought to make those illegal before, it would be a much more peaceful world 🤷🏼♂️
“I mean by no measure did he deserve to die, BUT”.... should’ve just stopped there bro.
OP, how many times have you been pulled over for a traffic violation or a speeding ticket and purely feared for your life? As a white male, I’ve never had to fear for my life when I was pulled over.
How many more instances of police brutality to minorities will it take before you realize that privilege
Yea, my heart rate would be jacked too if I got pulled over while I had a felony arrest warrant for 20 years.

If you resist arrest you are putting your life in danger, you are putting the cop under massive pressure and that can lead to mistakes.
Doctors are different, their own life isn’t in danger when they make mistakes. When the officer made a mistake her own life was at risk as she no longer had control of the suspect due to his resistance to arrest. This puts an enormous amount of pressure on the cop and lead to this awful mistake, which I’m sure she’ll also have to face for the rest of her life. Bottom line don’t resist arrest and these types of things won’t happen.
“By no measure did he deserve to die”
Try 26 year veteran. Gun on one side and taser on the other. Taser bright yellow and gun black. Taser and gun feel different.
Alright I see the majority of arguments here. Didn't realize the cop was a long time veteran, in which case it is rather absurd that she can mistake glock for a taser.
However are we just looking one side of the story here? Yes he didn't deserve to die, yes mistakes were made, yes there is systematic discrimination against minorities. However, on the other side, yes Daunte is a criminal, yes he dove back into the car to resist arrest. Whether we admit it or not, cops also work in a high danger environment where they can die from criminals who retaliate and resist. They so have a responsibility to protect and serve the innocent. And by no measure is Daunte innocent. He was a potential threat and danger to others. So I don't see a problem with the traffic stop and I don't see a problem with how they proceeded with the arrest (no excessive force involved). I do see a problem with him resisting and I do see a problem with a trained veteran being neglectful in a critical moment.
However, the cop will get what she deserves through due process as evidenced with past trials of similar nature. Why the riots? Why the further violence? These are people looking for excuse to cause harm to a peaceful society. These riots are counterproductive and hurt the bystanders the most.
Get away from cnn and Fox News and start thinking for yourself.
🤦♂️ this country man
What bothers me is that the protesters go right to racism as the reason for what happened to Duante. It’s just so shortsighted. Yes it was tragic and absolutely he didn’t deserve to die. Yes the cop should face severe consequences - but for incompetence and negligence NOT for being a “racist”. What does race have to do with trying to arrest someone with a warrant out for a violent crime who then resists arrest?
EY1: 💯 💯 💯
Defunding is the worst thing we can do, look at the cities that have defunded, they are going to hell and innocent kids are getting killed on the streets. By defunding the cops we are standing up for criminals and failing to protect innocent people of all colors. We need to train police better and make sure that criminals know not to mess with police or their life could be endangered due to the duress of the moment. In places that criminals aren’t scared of cops those are generally awful places to live.

I also question why people resist arrest. Is there data on how many minorities die while in custody? I’m white but my husband is Mexican and we have two young sons. When my sons are older I will tell them “do not resist arrest under any circumstances even if you are innocent. Mistakes and mix ups happen so do what they tell you and hope they treat you with respect. Even if they don’t keep being respectful of them and you’ll live. Mistakes and mix ups can be fixed while you’re in custody and we’ll get you out as soon as possible.”
My perspective on this is whether the cop would have even pulled a taser on a non-black male and whether the use of force is consistent. I agree that there isn’t explicit racism, but I do believe there are implicit beliefs causing certain individuals to escalate in situations they wouldn’t have if dealing with a non-black individual.
I've seen white dudes get into fistfights with cops and get professionally escorted out in handcuffs. But cops will kill black people for trying to run away. Double standard.
I’ve seen a drink white guy armed with an AR-15 safely apprehended by police.
Not a rookie cop. And cops need to stop accidentally killing people.
Agreed. With 26 years worth of experience. You should be able to decipher a taser from a pistol.
Wouldn't letting him go be an option? Do we really need to use deadly force so often?
To the person that said....if he had complied he would have been fine....really? You sure? I wish there were some examples were that was not so...hmmm.
We moved past disciplining kids with belts....maybe we can move past using deadly force so often
I just think there is a middle ground.....do I think deadly force is needed sometimes? Yup of course, do I think it's over used? 100%
Why can other countries do better? Is there something we could possibly learn from that?
Could police training be federally standardized perhaps? Could gun training be improved?
What I'm saying is that there is a ton of improvements that could be made and the system is flawed....so we can keep looking at this one case at a time and balming the cops or the victim but the number of incidents are too high to just say "everything is fine, if they had just listened" we know plenty of times of abuse and when listening is not enough. It's time for some major reform help both the police and the civilians.
