Can somebody please explain the concern about a corona uptick in the cold months? I wanted to better understand the science with cold weather and viruses. It’s mostly the being indoors thing and less the cold air being bad for you thing

In addition to what everyone else said, there's the concern of a double-whammy with flu season. Both in terms of stress to the healthcare system, and at a patient level since you can get co-infections.

like

this is why every doctor and nurse is asking everyone to get their flu shot this year!

My general understanding is that cold weather weakens the immune system, making it easier to get sick when the temperature drops. If we don't get this situation under control by then it could be a blood bath.

like

I’ve also read that in colder weather, air particles/ droplets in the air can “linger” longer and possibly spread to others around you more easily, but when it’s very hot and humid, they tend to dissipate much quicker and don’t travel quite as much.

like

People go inside when it’s cold. People go inside when it’s really hot. People go inside when bars are open.

I believe it’s mostly about being indoors. But also viruses thrive more at colder temps.

Many viruses do not survive long at all in warm or humid temperatures. That was the thought process behind “it will go away in April.” That actually holds for a lot of viruses, including other coronavirus. The flu (not a coronavirus) for example is almost non existent during the summer months.
For reasons we do not know yet, it clearly is not the case for the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. As evidence I present Florida and Texas which are hot and humid and the virus is surging.

Agree- which is odd to me since Indonesia was having one of the highest cases in the world at point despite being in a tropical region. I had a hard time understanding why people thought it would go away in the summer when it spread like wild fire in hot/humid areas before reaching pandemic levels in the US. I assume the hit in the fall will be bad due to a) increased indoor activities if we don’t quarantine b) higher risk of exposure to cold/flu which will lower the immune system and make you more vulnerable to catch everything else c) I guess the cold which I didn’t know was a factor in lowering your immune system but I guess that will do it. Schools are also Petri dishes so that will be an interesting spike come flu season if that whole thing goes through.

Cold weather means flue season. In a normal year we have a few people who die and or are hospitalized. Flu plus Covid would be a problem since hospitals would have to triage typical vs atypical pneumonia and there would be a lot of tests. The US isn’t keeping up with Covid now, not sure how things will play out.

this is why every doctor and nurse is asking everyone to get their flu shot this year!

Viruses have a protective layer of fat which encases its RNA. This layer is fragile and is very temperature sensitive. Heat and soap degrades this layer and destroys the virus. Cold weather allows it to last much longer in the environment, that’s why we have the flu season etc.

I sent a second follow up email asking if they had made any decisions on who will be asked for inperson interviews, he said....check comments plz 🙏
