It really has nothing to do with the coursework. It’s a particularly efficient talent pipeline for experienced hires. Schools do the legwork to screen for the best experienced professionals (of the self-selected group who want to attend an MBA program), and firms skim the best off the top through campus recruiting. It’s a fast, relatively cheap and proven way to fill a significant portion of hiring needs each year, with the added efficiencies of being able to offer consistent salaries and start dates to everyone. FWIW I took some pretty tough quant courses at my program, did some awesome internships and really impactful work. Definitely feel like I learned a thing or two! Sidenote - ~90% of my teams have had MBAs (the ~10% being BAs and non-integratives). Is that unusual?!

Like most people said.. it’s not really about classes. It’s about self discovery, leadership training, learning how to work with many diverse people from various walks of life and dealing with adversity. No way an undergrad program helps with this as much as grad school. There were also obvious EQ gaps between students from other grad programs vs students in the MBA program. Makes sense for professional service firms to target MBA hires.

We’re not. Most of us don’t have an MBA.

I’m not attacking you. Clarifying that a significant chunk of people do have an MBA. In no firm out there will the majority of people have an MBA.... especially when you expand the scope to globally.

All about the network, my young padawan

I don’t think that’s true at all - got hired out of undergrad as a liberal arts major. I would say most business analysts didn’t actually study business or come in with any real knowledge, so it’s definitely not something they’re adamant about.

Top consulting firms couldn't care less if you have an MBA

You can join out of undergrad, you can join from industry, you can join from MBA, or you can join from another degree program.

We aren’t adamant about it. We regularly promote undergrad hires straight through. That said, it’s a fully-sponsored option and many elect to take it as a 2 year break. We also regularly hire from JD, MD, PhD, and industry pools. That said, MBA recruiting is a very cost-effective pipeline to maintain.

And your basic business electives will be relatively simple compared to MBA. They’re typically geared as standalone or minimal pre reqs. MBA programs go much deeper and ain’t a walk in the park.

I know, I can tell (that pendulum swing) based on what I'm seeing inside my old firm, as well as the inquiries I'm getting from professor and physician friends. It doesn't change my statement above on need. Quite unfortunate. One can only hope that covid accelerates the end of the industry, though it won't be the case.

Not adamant, just one way in

I join after getting a MD. Most people on my case teams do not have a MBA.

Because, gate keeping

You shouldn’t be applying to job openings on campus as an experienced hire.

An MBA is definitely not a requirement . Makes it a lot easier to find recruits though.

I have a JD. I’m finding it’s pretty rare to find folks here with an mba

I know we have a thread on this for MBB, but I was wondering if people could give some insight into any retention bonuses/raises/other perks like increased annual leave at their firm as a result of Covid. We got some extra holidays over Christmas and our bonus was paid regularly for last year, but nothing extra. The US bowls seem to be reporting large retention bonuses, so was wondering if UK is similar
